Each pad is 10" long and maybe 2" wider than the cockpit gunwale it bears on.

Can somebody pass judgement on the adequacy of this vis-a-vis the plastic not getting warped.

If it seems adequate, I will move on to figuring out how to keep them in place....

That looks good. Spreads load over a wide area at each contact point. Adding carpet or padding?

Got plenty of both on hand, and a newly-opened tube of construction adhesive..... but I am trying to figure out whether it will make it any easier on the hull or just make me feel better.

I will probably go with whatever you say.

Less scratchy... simply a cosmetic issue. I would use pads.
