Hi

I had a search but there are no recent posts I could find about this.

I've just put a deposit on on a new TI. While at the Sydney Boatshow I asked at the Club Marine Insurance stand about insuring a Tandem Island. After explaining what a TI was he told me "we wouldn't insure that because it doesn't have a motor".

The Hobie guys at the stand next door were a bit surprised about this indicating that they had other Hobie's owners insured with Club Marine.

The Hobie sales guy also suggested that I could get my new TI included on my home contents policy. This would be cheaper and will cover me for theft ( which Is the main reason I want insurance) however it won't cover me for damage while sailing (which doesn't worry me too much) or public liability ( which does worry me)

I had lots of problems finding an insurance company to cover my TrailerTri and ended up using a broker, after ringing every company I could find, and getting cover from a company who knocked me back when I rang them direct :?

What are others doing? Do I need public liability?

What company do I ring without going right through the phone book?

Thanks

Brad

I ran into this issue when I went to insure my TI. I first tried to insure it with a typical boat policy like I always did with my power boats. This proved to be very difficult because the insurance companies did not know how to handle a boat such as the TI.

At this point I contacted a local Insurance Agency (broker) rather than continuing to try to contact the insurance companies myself. They proved to be invaluable and quickly came up with a solution. They added a "watercraft endorsement" to my homeowners policy. It covers the TI (and its trailer) for fire, theft, liability, and collision. There were different prices for whatever deductible I wanted. I chose a $500 deductible and the policy costs me only $55 USD per year. Perfect.

I assume you have Insurance Agencies in Australia. Try contacting one of them or talk directly to your home insurance company and ask for a watercraft endorsement.

Easy answer: NRMA

I went through this last year. I had the TI on my home and contents with YouI when it was "stored at home" for $80/year.... As soon as i put it on a trailer and at a storage location the questions from the same insurer YouI were suddenly incredible:
- what is youngest age of person who will steer vessel
- what communication device onboard
- what safety equipment? Epirb?
- how fast does vessel go?
- what is the sail area?
- at least another 10 questions, and when i asked how do i know youngest age, they said call up each time...
Cost went from$80/year to $1200/year
I was immensely frustrated that as soon as it was stored off my property the water attributes sudddenly mattered.

Anyway, NRMA sorted, ~$350/year inc $3500 for my trailer, ~$8500 for TI and all hobie accessories, and all stored away from my home. I have no other policies with NRMA.

You will no doubt have seen my earlier posts, but I can say that I have been with NRMA since I bought my TI in 2012, and it costs me $302 pa for cover of.$8280.

Thanks for reminding me... I must ring and get the spinnaker added to the inventory.
