Kayaking Bob

Well, I don't think I am ever going to get waves like that on the local lakes, but I am FO SHO leashing everything down after reading that!

Great story Tom. Had a similar experience when I first got my A.I.- on my 3rd trip out. I was approaching Port Jeff harbor and the wind/waves kicked up out of nowhere and buried my boat underwater.Had a full sail out. She came back up of course- but I did go into a bit of a shock  . And finally got control.
LIVE and learn I guess!
Also-on the same subject-I hate entering a harbor with large waves pushing me from behind. Dont like looking over my shoulder to see whats going to lift me up or possibly send me sideways either. When I had my Outback I used to come in backwards just letting the waves do the work. It was slow but far safer because it was easier to keep the boat perpindicular to the waves while also peddling forward to maintain control. Havent tried it with the A.I. yet but assume it would work just as well...

Same thing, running downwind just off the wind, hit by long mega-gust, AI initially felt like it was going to pearl but scooped itself out and accelerated to over 11 MPH, wheeee!

Thank you everyone for your input on my question. I'll try sailing a bit of an angle into the backs of the waves and see how that works for me. I'll also be looking closely at your spay skirt pattern K. Bob. Thank you.
And then I read Tom Ray's reply! HA! And here I am feeling nervous about having maybe 5-6" of my bow, and amas submerged for a good few seconds! I can only imagine me in that situation---- J.R. -"just kind of froze in that attitude, for a moment, and I wondered what would happen next." Tom Ray, that was a lot of thought for that situation and that short of a time. Me - "OH S*^T !! And I would have been so very sure that would be the end of me!!! But what a rush after you bobbed up again, hey? What a great adventure Tom Ray. Thanks.

After that experience, I'm eagerly watching invest 90, hoping it comes close. Just not too close. ;)

In all of my previous boats the trick was always to reef or adjust your speed so you are close to the speed of the waves vs. flying off or down them at an uncontrolled speed (although that can be great fun).

Once the A-1 Tandem arrives I will join in the fun and try it out in our local inlet (Ponce Inlet FL).

I share Scott's view.
One more thought after extensive riding in waves.
Upwind no problem except some good splashes, but it's part of the fun (at least in summer I guess)
After that, 3 possibilities :
- waves exactly at 90°
- waves roughly in the back
- waves coming from 3/4 in the back
In consistent wind and waves, my experience is that the first two positions clearly are to be avoided, especially the second one as the forces are such that steering loses some efficiency and one cannot control adequately where the AI is going (it can gybe by itself, round up suddenly...)
I find there's a balance to find : deeper you get more acceleration from the wave but it has to remain under control. Doing so, I've managed some good average speeds, without things getting too hectic.
