I'm thinking of an anchor. We opted for a trailer from our dealer and not the Trailex one. The dealer's was quite a bit cheaper. I thought the cover they made for the TI/AI covered the amas too? We do plan on towing it interstate both here in Nebraska as well as to Ohio and Michigan so I'll have to figure something out with a cover.

TI_Tom - I have a TI with Hobie cover and yes it covers the amas as well.

Thanks, from the picture in the Hobie catalog it looked like just the main kayak was covered. However, looking closer at the photo I think you can see an outline of the amas albeit faint. Grateful for the update info as that will certainly confirm my purchasing a Hobie cover.

Hi everyone ... interesting thread.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe using the TI cover requires removal of the rudder.

Yes? No?

Thanks,
SeaCrazy

I believe it does.

Correct. The cover does not accomodate the current rudder design. After I return from the beach I plan to price having a pocket sewn into the cover to fit over the vertical up rudder.

When you say "the cover does not accommodate the current rudder design" do you mean that the cover doesn't cover the rudder or the cover won't fit over the rudder? The reason I ask is because I thought maybe the cover had a slit for the rudder in the up position and the red rudder cover Hobie sells then fits over it?

In the Winter 2013-2014 catalog it shows a 7254 HOBIE Tandem Island Cover with what looks like a red bag loosely gathered over the rudder in the down position. I would assume it serves the purpose of simulating a red flag. There is also a 82420001 Rudder Cover Island/TI that looks like it covers the rudder in the up position without a cover.

Of course this may be all academic because if the TI is "new and improved" the cover will be also.

Quote from the catalog:
72054 Kayak Cover / 16'-18' 6"*
(*Tandem Island-folded and rudder removed / layed on deck)

I was all ready to lambaste Hobie for selling a cover that doesn't fit their boat since it started shipping with the new rudder since 2011.
But after thinking about it, this makes perfect sense, it only takes a sec to pull the rudder pin and lay the rudder on the deck. Trying to fit a cover over that rudder sticking up would be a royal pain.
Actually makes sense.
Bob

edit:
Pretty much everyone just throws that silly locking ring for the rudders away anyway because it's held down just fine by the rudder strings, so getting the pin in and out is actually quite easy.

Actually having the rudder down is not a good idea when on the trailer, the bottom 3/8" of my rudder is now missing (rubbed away) from dragging on the ground in a gas station parking lot ( LOL).

Fortunately, it's designed to throw itself away. Mine was lost in the first 2 weeks.

??? My Hobie TI boat cover fits with the new style rudder still attached and locked in the up position (just the boat, not with the amas/akas). It's pretty good quality.

I swapped out the split rings with some ss clevis pins, but I agree that the design really makes them obsolete.

Mark, I'm headed down the same path intending to buy a new TI, maybe this weekend at our Hobie Demo Days in Austin. In the meantime I purchased a used Revo 13 and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I made an anchor out of a 5 LB weight lifting disk that I sprayed with Rustoleum waterproof coating then tied 25 ft of polypropylene anchor line to. I keep it in a heavy duty vinyl zipper bag in the hull when not in use. It seems to hold very well in the lake against wind and boat traffic. I used another 25 FT of line to make a throw bag that can double as an extender for the anchor line in deeper water if needed.
I am a Paramedic and one of my first priorities was an onboard first aid kit in a small Pelican box that fits in a dry bag.
It has an assortment of band aids and some roll bandage and bulk 4x4 gauze pads. I mainly want to be able to control bleeding from major trauma. I added a pair of tweezers, scissors and a couple of rolls of waterproof tape. A foil blanket might be useful to add.
Hopefully this box will never have to be opened other than to check the contents.
I have been wondering how others stow things in their hulls without them sliding from the forward hatch to the rear hatch. Pool noodles are fine but smaller stuff is all over the boat.
Cheers
Chris

I like the tweezers idea for removing maybe splinters? Anchors are something I am interested in and yours sounds pretty cool. Much better than rocks in a mesh bag. lol Demoed a Revo 13 and thought it was very fast and maneuverable. Like you said just fun.

Are you getting a 2015 TI because you will have to buy it sight unseen? Not built yet unless Austin Kayak has a new demo model. If they do let us know. Otherwise you will be demoing a 2014 which will be similar but without the major upgrade - New Seats! Have fun at the demo days.

The dealer told me that Hobie is "trying" to have a 2015 at the Austin Demo Day next weekend. I plan to order one either way but I'm really hoping they have a TI out there so I can take some measurements and finalize my trailer modifications. The Revo has convinced me to take the deeper plunge for the TI. I put turbo fins on my mirage drive yesterday and can't wait to try it this weekend.

Buckaroo,

If Austin Kayak does get a 2015 TI for you to demo tomorrow definitely report back. And take pictures because that will be the first 2015 TI anyone has seen.
