The drive adds drag no matter what position the fins are in. If vertical they also catch weed. If horizontal they flutter annoyingly at speed.
If you are not pedaling then removing them will increase speed and also improve tacking.
You do need to put the drivewell plug in though when the mirage drive is removed.
