There are several software downloads that Velocitek can recommend for SpeedPuck use. The features will boggle your mind. One thing I do use them for is to replay my tracks, on a map of the lake, in slightly increased time frame to see where I hit various speeds, etc.

By the way, the SpeedPuck updates every half second.

Are there any defaults I should change?

Speed Damping, Heading Damping..... neither of which I have a clue about....

Walking around my yard, it appears my Garmin 78sc is updating my speed every second. It may be updating every .5 sec and displaying every second. So what? At the speeds we go in an Island, who needs to update every .5 second? My Garmin 78 gives me tons of info: small numbers, BIG numbers, lon/lat coordinates, location to about 10-15 ft, distance off course, 50 stored routes, 2000 stored wpts, VMG, speed, max speed, average speed, moving speed, sunrise, sunset, tides, time of day, trip time-moving, trip time-stopped, trip time-total, distance to next wpt, distance to final destination, bearing, heading, altitude, battery level, coastal charts, custom maps (google earth), and more. With a 2.6" color display and Blue Chart g2 US/Bahamas coastal charts (depth contours, marinas, harbor aids, etc), it is $248 on Amazon tp://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003I86PIM?keywords=garmin%2078&qid=1447272566&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1 And it floats according to Garmin. I have not verified that, and do not intend to. My 78 is in a dry bag and tethered to the hull.

Again, what was it Speedpuck gives you?

Keith

My Garmin 310 is basically useless for immediate feedback - lag times 3-5 seconds....

But, when I compared SpeedPuck to my Garmin 201 yesterday I did not see a huge diff..... a significant diff in immediacy of the readout to be sure... but not huge and I would call the 201 totally usable for most situations.

The killer feature for me is immediacy of feedback. SpeedPuck does something with Doppler shift that supposedly makes it quicker/more accurate than comparing trackpoints.

A unique (?) feature is the visual indicator of how far off your intitial tack you are - And if I ever fully understand it, I am guessing that will be useful in assessing how much dagger board is best for what tacks.

OTOH, my 201 has a "Heading" display that can coexist with "Speed"....

If anybody is asking if SpeedPuck is The Revealed Truth, or The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread.... I would say "No".... and it's plenty expensive to boot.

Would I have bought if if I knew how well my Garmin 201 was going to stack up against it ?

The jury is out on that one.... I have yet to see if/how the added responsiveness fits in with working on my surf ski stroke... But I am hopeful... And, as I said before, I don't want my survivors to have too much fun.... -)

And I *do* like the huge readout.... It's so big that you can comprehend it out of the corner of the eye instead of having to look at it.
