Really interesting discussion going on here. Stuff I never thought much about.
I still think the main culprit here is the Harkin cleat Hobie mounts for the sail control line. Basically if you fall of with the sail cleated the sail is still powered. Hopefully someone can come up with a self releasing clutch, where if you fall off then the main control line releases. If we can accomplish that, then guys could tie their tethers to the furling line. This would force the main to furl if you fall overboard. I think it's a good idea someone just needs to think thru a simple solution and post it.

The problem there is that once the sail furls, the tether is then going to pull/drag you along, which makes movement in the water difficult.
If you want to work out the details on such a system, obviously you're free to have at it - it's not my intent to discourage anyone from trying to build a better mousetrap. Maybe you'll come up with an idea or two that nobody else has thought of. In the meantime, I still advise getting rid of the camcleat and using a standard horncleat next to the seat. In my opinion and experience, it gives you far more control, can't automatically and won't accidently cleat when you don't want it to, and yet can still be "cleated" and yet relied upton to release automatically if you fall overboard.
Again, it's just my preference, but after trying it for about 3 years now I won't go back to a camcleat.
