Nice idea Slaughter. And the timber support can be lifted off the cart for onboard stowage I guess.
If there is enough room, a sleeve with a top flange glued inside and to the top of the scuppers would spread the load and be advantageous. I will be out AI-ing in a couple of days and will check out the clearances....Pirate

Slaughter,
Do the verticals still extend above the scupper holes after you installed the
wooden cross bar with the padding?
My Hobie cart verticals have 'lock-pins' which swing out to prevent the verticals from dropping back down accidentally and letting the cart drop away.
I like the idea of additional padding on the cart but would be worried about the cart dropping out if the cart encountered a soft spot on the sand.

I just got my TI in December, should I have received anodised AKAs? As the one that came with mine are painted and they are easily scratched. :x

No, anodize is just entering the system. Fyi... Anodize also scratches and shows marks. The process protects better from corrosion, but marks still show.

While I some times agree it is a design fault/failure and it appears it is in this case. I cannot believe people are trying to drag a large heavy "plastic" item that quite simply pulls apart, through such soft sand and up such steep embankments. Then try and place the blame in the designers lap. You are told do not store the kayak on the kart as it will easily deform the hull, Commonsense tells you it's a weak area under excessive load, reduce the load.

Everything no matter how well engineered has a limit and trying to drag a loaded TI through such terrain is not only IMO foolish, because of the strain it places on your equipment, but also your body. It only takes 5 to 10 minutes longer to remove the aka/amas reducing the weight by almost 50% and get the kayak main out of the soft sand while protecting the hull from excess stress, carry the amas/akas up, stow upside down on the aka supports if you have a distance to travel or continue making two or three trips. Didn't you buy the kayaks for fun and "fitness".

Pirate - I don't take it off. It all sits nicely upside down behind the seat and I wrap the seat bungie around it and the crossbar.

Tidalwave - Mine is the older cart without the lock in pins. Even with my mod, it still comes up right through the holes though.

ELM - I agree mate. The biggest downfall of the AI is that it is almost indestructible, and most of us are trying to find it's limits. I'm certainly not saying that it's the case in Paul's circumstance, but there are other cases that I have read where, if I was making the decisions for Hobie, would have said 'bad luck'.
