Took the boat with jib out yesterday and paid special attention to the behavior of the bow when going upwind and downwind. Some had aske if the bow is submarining or actually getting lift.

When close hauled the bow seems to sit slightly lower than without the jib and I get a bit more water over the bow when breaking through waves. On the other hand, on a broad reach the bow looks like it sits higher than it would if I did't have the jib. Not really clear why the difference between points of sail. Is this typical?

I have no idea if this has any influence on what you saw..

But if you watch a tail tell just behind the mast and on the windward side, sometimes the flow points straight back (attached flow) but can point at the mast (seperation bubble) but the tell tail can also point upwards and parallel with the mast.

A raked mast is more likely to have the seperated flow just behind the mast moving upwards and parallel to the mast and it would seem to me that if the air is being accelerated upwards, there would be a force in the opposite direction - which would try and push the bow down..

just thowing out something Ive seen before.

Courious if anyone has ever sailed an island by jib alone. How balanced was the boat? Is it a fun way to sail?

Vetgram said: I was surprised by a quick storm during this sail. I have video to show me frantically furling both sails as the first gusts of wind hit me from behind. The day turned out to be the ultimate test for the jib setup. (Vetgam quote).

Nice video, thanks.

I couldn't quite see how you furled the jib.

I take it that you had to go forward to attache the jib's clew to the main's tack, loosen the jib's tack then furl.

Is that about how it works or did I miss something.

Great idea and set up.

Tom I should have a video up in the next day or two that details the whole jib setup on land with spliced video of me furling and taking down/putting up the jib etc. I will post it in this thread. The process has be improved an is faster now.

Basicly you...
1. Scoot forward and unclip the clew at the self taking jib.
2. Uncleat the main sheet and jib tack sheet.
3. Pull the main's furling line.

Takes about 5 seconds to furl with this arraingment. I consider the normal stock AI furling rime to be 2-3 seconds.

The short hanging line between the jib clew and mast remains connected all the time. It is only has to be detached when taking the jib down to store it away.

I now understand and can picture it.

How simple.

I like that.

Thanks.
