Did a bit of experimenting on the water today. I have come to the conclusion that pedalling below 5 knots makes a sizable difference and will add a Knot to the speed. Over 5 Knots the improvement is less noticeable, but it will help it point higher.

Several AI owners have discussed using the Mirage Drive as a secondary keel-daggerboard
but have mentioned that analysis has shown that the 'flippers' interfere with each
others' hydrodynamic flow, when used passively.

Do you think that a second daggerboard installed on the portside, as a mirror of the starboard
daggerboard well would give better pointing?
My old C-Scow had two daggerboards and pointed very well.

Might a second daggerboard 'slot' be contemplated as an 'upgrade' for the AI hull when
new molds have to be made at the factory?

I experimented with holding the pedals so the blades were at approx 45 degrees to vertical and that seems to work reasonably well offering some sideways resistance but keeping clear of each other helping with the turblence. I imagine that the right hand blade probably interferes with the dagger boards flow to some extent, but with all 3 in play, it seemed to hold its course reasonably well.
It would be interesting to do some proper flow tests with the blades at different angles to find the most efficient place for them.

Interesting discussion! 8)
I use a 6mm eyebolt to lock the drive in the fins down position:
viewtopic.php?f=32&t=10831&p=57071
You can lock the fins at about 45 degrees by choosing a 3 or 4 hole difference when inserting the eyebolt:

I'll have to try it next time I'm out!

No Pirate, I still use the bungee which does a better job of keeping the fins up tight against the hull. :)

and can still be attached and used in shallow water thus limiting depth of fin. The pin is a handy idea all the same...Pirate

Hadn't thought of that use for the bungee -to aid when fluttering in very shallow water.
Nice work Pirate! 8)
Now that's definitely one for the pool room!
