The dagger boards purpose is to prevent side slippage when sailing up wind.
Any sail boat including the Adventure can sail without it, but your fwd progress will be impeded because you won't be pointing as high. The optimum usiage for a dagger board is to use it upwind, but pull it up or clear out for downwind (if left in the down position downwind, it will impede your down wind pointing and performance). The drive and dagger do not interfere with each other on the adventure, so both can be used at the same time when needed.

Also, if you get into rough waters, the daggerboard helps smoth things out a little, and buys you extra seconds to react to big gusts.

Also, even in dead calm waters you can turn in half the space, as the boat pivots on the daggerboard when it's in. Very useful in a harbor or boat launch in tight quarters.

Hi Roller, we had a fairly lengthy discussion of the role of the daggerboard/centreboard recently. Have a browse through this thread: viewtopic.php?f=71&t=13503&start=45
