I made my rod holders out of PVC piping.

I can handle 4 rods, but have only used them with 3 (rod holders on each side).

Kayaking Bob,

Do you troll under sail w/ this rig? Or, are you bottom fishing?

Regarding your PVC rod rack, is it using the hull rod holder on the left and simply resting on the hull on the right?

Yep, trolling, caught a nice little mahi mahi last year trolling while under sail

Below is an old picture of my second design, but shows how they all are connected with spectra cord to the paddle retainer clip, and Velcro'd to the cross-bar. You can see, the far end does use the Hobie recessed rod holder. It is quite sturdy, but I don't tighten the drag too tight in case a monster takes the bait! :D
I also leash all rods with leashes attached to the cross-bar.

Also notice the SS bolt to act as a gimble.

The new lower angle keeps the rods out of the way for sailing, and spread farther apart for trolling two rods.

I'm probably not the computer guru you need Mongoose but are you using 'photobucket' or 'imageshack' as an intherface programe to convert photos from your camera to the forum? At first I didn't even know you needed to use this software but I now use photobucket. When I was on a cycling forum it was simply a cut and paste, but to download photos to this forum it's a bit more cumbersome.

I have experimented with numerous rod holders, and the best I found for a forward mount was the RAM 2000 rod holder system, otherwise known as RAM-117

Since using that, in an effort to equalise weight distribution better, I went to a rear rod holder assembly using RAM 2008 tubes and Hobie ord extenders. I've found this superior to forward mounting for optimal sailing (rod leashes mandatory). Here's a few pics of the results:

reconlon,

Nice install and it looks unintrusive not needing to drill any extra holes into your hull. I was wondering why you needed two tiers of tubing, thinking that it'll help prevent the rods from slipping out. I had a bad experience with a PVC tube cemented into the rocks while ulua fishing. It broke causing my gear to crash into the rocks. Guess the PVC was exposed too long in the sun that it became brittle. Also, there was some extra torque applied since our surfcasting poles were 13'+ rated for 50-80lb test. So thought I also check if you had to periodically change your rod holders out.

yakass,

I was thinking of mounting adjustable bimini rod holders to the akas of my TI to supplement the built-in rear holders. But not sure if adding another source of stress to the akas was a good idea. Did you have any issues with your rod holders mounted on the akas?

cheers!

We paint the PVC rod holders that helps protect from the sun.

My first attempt was a single pipe and had little strength, The double spreads any torque and holds the rods firmly, top and bottom. My latest version is the first picture, which includes a vertical holder for re-rigging and the two horizontal holders (out the back) for launching/landing in larger shore break. Also they both use SS bolts at the bottom as a gimble.

I'm very happy with them and two friends I fish with have since made their own copy for their AI's because they liked how well they work.

recolon and yakass,

I'm looking at a combination of both of your ideas. With the akas setup in the front of the rear passenger seat on the TI, it's looking like it'll provide a cross bar where I can mount my FF and a couple of rod holders. And can use a PVC tubing setup to provide a few more places to hold rods behind the rear seat. For now, just awaiting arrival for the TI to my neighborhood.

As always, thanks for sharing.
