Hi All. Just about to buy my first AI and I am aware that there have been some improvements along the way. When I'm looking at an AI are there any updates features that immediately make it recognizable as a 2010 model and not an 09 etc?
If I'm paying top $$$ then I at least want to be sure I have the latest version.
Thanks
Pete.

I think the most obvious changes are on the Mirage drive. The new pedals have a pad where you put your foot and the each pedal has a small bungee attached to the shaft to keep the pedal upright.

,.. and of course the large Turbo Fins and new seat (W/O backpack), but anyone can add all these items to any model, after the fact.

Ask to see the paperwork on the boat, new or used.

If it's used, there are several threads here discussing buying advice, such as performing leak tests.

If new, dealers will sometimes have demos or even brand new 08-09s in stock (at a laffably small discount).

In any case, authorized Hobie dealers will give you the straight poop. No need to guess.

Best advice- GO RED!

NOHUHU is right JetJester. But he forgot to add, Go RED but only if you are over 60.
However if you still have youth on your side, have an image to uphold, would still like to look trendy and can handle the extra speed........ Go YELLA.

Agreed. Yellow is young, cool and nerdy. (If you're into SpongeBob Squarepants).

Sharks love it too.

But trust me Pete, the supermodels go for RED

Phew, Slaughter, just scrape in with Yella by a couple of years. Just as well, I got my trailer today, and off on a 8 hour round trip tomorrow to pick up my TI.

I'm 30. Mine's Red. I've always been mature for my age. Oh yeah, and I like to go fast, and red is faster!

Serial number should end with AI10, as long as Hobie did not changed their numbering scheme.

Axel (satisfied with yellow hull)

So my friends color is out of my hands. The condition in my house is if I pick the craft they pick the color.
My six yr old son is voting for yellow and yes nohuhu, he is into spongebob and young enough to carry the color. I'm also no super model so still fit the yellow criteria

Thanks all for your comments, I will be purchasing from my local dealer. I just wanted to make sure that I was getting what I'm going to be paying for. Many people have been working hard to improve the AI since it was created including many people on this forum. I just want to take advantage of that.
Pete.

If your six year old wants a yellow, that's what you've gotta get. No point arguing with him. Besides, he's probably a little young to handle all of the speed that a RED one would give you. :D

Correct serial system is shown here: http://www.hobiecat.com/support/index-kayak.html

I believe July (latest as of today) production would be something like ...G010

sorry to disappoint but as Matt will tell you the coefficient of friction for the yellow is a lot lower. so to put it in laymans terms the yellow is smoother and so therefore faster. the red goes faster myth was first unleashed on the unsuspecting seniors by luxury car makers (the only thing that really went faster was their money! )

Is there any talk yet of the TI aka connection design being incorporated into the AI ?

jms2756, That might be the case in your hemisphere, but up here on the right side of the earths axis (and seasons), our water rotates counterclockwise, August is hot, and RED is always faster. It's just a fact of nature.

I have tons of photographic proof:

As you can clearly see- RED wins.
