Aloha,

I broke my steering knob handle and am trying to replace it with a new one. A couple simple questions:

1. Does any one know the exact size allen wrench that is needed to unscrew the handle? I can't tell if the few I have in that size range are the wrong kind or a bit too small, or if the head is stripped or what - I know you can have a slightly different size and strip these things easily...

2. When I do get the old handle off, what should I expect from how the assembly on the inside that connects to the handle will react... aside from becoming disconnected of course... I just don't know how fragile that situation is and if there is any caution to be taken.

Thanks much!

Hi, I'm still looking for some help here. Here's what I have found on that allen wrench size:

in standard, 1/8 too small, 9/64 too big (?!?!)
in metric, 3mm too small, 4mm to bog (do they make a 3.5mm?)

Thanks again, might just have a 1/8 stripped bolt, but still not sure.

Not sure what you have...

Knob? The knob kit comes with a Phillips head screw.

Try an EZ-OUT if the screw is stripped.

Yes 3.5 mm is a real size. And the one I can never find!

ShakaGeoff, when you unscrew the handle, you can just lift it up. The assembly below the knob and in the in the hull stays in one piece and nothing with come apart except that now you can lift up the handle.
