I figured their functionality was for carrying the ama, but I am starting to doubt that after observing that they are not placed at the center of gravity.... more like 6-8 inches aft of COG.

There has to be a reason....

?

(Not looking at my TI right now.) I think they're centered between the aka holes? They do seem to be just right for lifting the amas (and attached akas) as I set them in the cradles on the trailer. You're right, though, on the rare occasions I actually remove them completely I usually forget they're slightly off-balance and bang one end on the ground as the akas pull out.

Since I rarely take them off, the handles' primary function for me is the attachment point for my "keep-out" lines that are tied around the front aka brace mounts.

I have taken my akas off twice since I bought my TI in mid 2012.

They are perfectly placed for carrying and lifting out of the cradles.
