I just noticed that my mast socket is about 4 nylon balls short of being full: https://picasaweb.google.com/1081497986 ... 4413198066

Ordinarily I would think this a dumb question - "Yes, of course it should be full...."

But when I tried to pry one loose with my fingers, it definitely was not happening.... so, never having removed that plate that holds them in, I have to wonder how four could have escaped..... or if, maybe, it is supposed to be four short of a full house....

Peter, those balls, being easier to wear than the mast socket, wear out sooner, until their diameter is small enough to escape the housing. They most likely bounced out during transport.

You might find that the mating surfaces of the removable bearing retainers is not perfectly flat, so you might consider rubbing then on s sheet of sandpaper to remove any high spots.;

They are not expensive, so I suggest buying a replacement set (keeping the existing ones ass spares), and then taking a large diameter pool noodle (the ones with the hole in the middle), cutting a 3 inch long piece, and jamming this down the hole whenever the mast is out.

This way, there is no opportunity for you to lose your balls, even if they wear down their diameter in the future.
