Pin aka's on Hobie Island

One of the aka's on my boat kept falling out. I ended up pinning it - seems to be working well. Happy to help anyone else.

I just drilled through (with a relatively weak drill - easy peasy)

That is an interesting solution. I caused an arm not to seat properly when I attached a cleat to the top of my xbar. The screw was getting in the way of the ama seating. Removed the screw, happy days. I used to have those types of pins on my scupper cart and the clip would get popped loosing the pin or coming out completely. I don't have a ready alternative, save to say that I tie spectra line around the AMAs and attach to the button on the boat (both sides) as insurance just in case there is a slippage. Can remove the lines when I need to get the ama out of the xbar.

What you've done is exactly what I'd considered doing back in 2010 when the TI with the new knuckles was first released. There were issues with the early clips releasing underway, due to manufacturing tolerance issues. Hobie sent out a fix kit and I had no further problems so I didn't go ahead with it.
When I proposed doing the mod back then, Roadrunner wisely pointed out that the knuckles are designed to twist/rotate and suggested I elongate the hole in the knuckle end to allow it to work as designed. I was just wondering if you were aware of this?

i will probably do this myself, i had a very close call with 3 people aboard in high winds, with brand new boat, i always check to make sure they are locked in but about 4 hours into sailing i noticed diagonal wrinkles in the trampoline, i quickly noticed the right rear aka popped out about 2 inches, i have some lines that run from aft seat out to the ends of the rear akas that are for downwind in light conditions, they are cleated when not in use and that saved my butt.

That looks a lot more secure and foolproof than the OEM method and still allows for easy removal. Nice work.

Great idea! I have been toying with the same sort of thing using a locking pin with a shock cord backup. I rarely take the AKAs off, but never went out without giving them a tug first.
