I have a 2020 Tandem Island with the new MD180 drives with kick up fins. The problem is that the drive fins kick up by themselves under a stiff wind (sailing fast). They will not lock back into place by pedaling them (like Hobie advertises). The force of the water going by them is too great. I have to physically remove them from the well and snap the fins back in place by hand. I have tried to adjust the set screw so that it takes more force to kick up the fins but when I adjust it in enough to prevent false kick ups, when I do actually hit the bottom and they legitimately kick up, I can’t get them to snap back into place (even by removing the drives and snapping them by hand). I have contacted the dealer and requested the older MD180 drives as a replacement. I feel, after a few months of sailing with these that the kick up fins are not practical on the Island boats. BTW I already tried having one drive replaced, thinking it might be a defective part but the new had the same problem. Has anyone had any similar experiences? This has been a real issue for me since getting the boat new in March. I appreciate any insight.

You would have to be stopped to get the fins to move forward when pedaling. Seems you are being to aggressive with the adjustments? Slight changes are all that is needed. If sailing at speeds, you might just remove the drives and use the plugs.

I don't have the new kick up fins, but when sailing at speed, I keep one pedal forward so the fins are up against the hull. Perhaps in that orientation, they won't kick up? Just a thought.

I believe we spoke?

The answer was to keep the KU drives due to the fact they WILL kick up when needed. Tension the set screw to hold the fins down under sailing load. Carry the tool to loosen the screw and re-set the fins if the drive does kick up when hitting something.
