A majority (near 95% of my Hobie Tandem Island (TI) sailing is in salt water conditions where tide, current, waves, storms all play a role in adding both excitement and risks....
My 2022 TI is set up for "offshore" conditions that I sail in just about every sail. Lots of focus on safety, redundancy, communications gear, sail plans, .... the list goes on....
This fall I have return to simple fresh water lake sailing. - Less risk - No tides to time or fight - No current to push me around when sailing up wind - No salt to rinse off the kayak and all the gear at the end of the sail - No need for my 2.5 HP Suzuki outboard engine - Faster launch and recovery
I do gain unpredictable wind in both speed and direction (near 360 degree shifts all over the place)....
Fun can still be had and I enjoy a bit of small lake fresh water sailing....while I wait for my next salt water challenge.
Enjoy a YouTube video shot on Marsh Creek State Park lake (near my home in Pennsylvania). Fall leaves add lots of color. Will be sailing the same lake tomorrow.

Nice. I've spent years based on idyllic looking lakes, ringed with mountains that hide/generate fast approaching windstorms able to turn sailing rigs into kindling. That seemed acceptable risk since with reasonable footwear I could walk to safety if washed ashore. But then I found my last lake was stealthily being infested by sea lampreys, where "the bite itself can be painful due to the lamprey’s rasping teeth and strong suction". So now I manage risk sailing sharky seas, only close in onshore breezes.
