2014 PA Rod Handle

Hello new Hobie family,

First order of business is that I purchased a new (used) PA 12 last weekend! I have high hopes for my kayak fishing this year, and many years to come.

Second order--I took the kayak out for its first Sunday afternoon paddle in a small, 24-acre lake in my neighborhood. I wanted to get the feel for the kayak so that I'd be prepared for a serious day of fishing. I loaded all my poles, tackle, fired up the fishfinder, and had an immensely enjoyable experience.

One thing that I realized while paddling: there's certainly rod storage in the front of the kayak, but do the 2014 models have a bracket for the rod handle? I can certainly put the top 2-3 eyes into the rod holder, but I didn't see a bracket/notch to put the base of the fishing pole. As a result, I wound up with several poles resting on top of each other and getting somewhat tangled.

Do the 2014 Hobie PAs just not have a bracket? I'm probably missing something!

I have a PA 14 (2014) that doesn't have it either and it was obviously a design change. I am wondering if the new H-Bar accessory rod rack will work on the older round rail on earlier models. If so I may have to pick up a couple. Does anyone know how much they cost?

If you purchased a used PA12, it would not be the same as the picture since the PA12 came out with the new Vantage seat and the current deck flooring layout. That picture looks like a 2009-2010 PA since the rudder is mounted on the seat. If you have those angled steps on the side and the green plastic seat, then you have a PA14.

I can understand your concern. I just sold my 2012 PA14 to a good friend. I fish with spinning rods only. I only used the rod storage tubes and the stepped rests on the sides when transporting the PA to the launch. Once on the water, I might keep one rod in those tubes. I have found that if you put the butt end of the rod for one of your rods on each side and let the rod rest towards the rear, that can work for being on the water as well.

The space is limited along side the seat if you're wanting to have multiple rods to access while on the water. A lot of folks add rod holder setups behind the seat (crates, pvc setups, etc.) to handle all the extra rods they take on the water.

Those new H-rail rod holders should clamp onto the older railings. At least that's what I have read. Will be picking up my 2015 PA14 in a few weeks so it will be interesting to see how I want to use those rod holders as well. Good luck and congratulations on the PA purchase!

FYI...the H-rail rod holders run about $17 each if I remember correctly.

I just got a 15 PA14 and the rear rod holders do look like they will fit the older model.

If you're referring to the Hobie black rod tube extensions that go in the rear rod holders (with the covered caps), those should fit every PA regardless of year. I have a set and will probably get a second set in case they are needed. They work well for me for additional holders beside the YakAttack Blackpak I use.

Congrats on the 2015 PA14. Looking forward to getting mine very soon!

I transport my kayak on a trailer and prefer to keep all my fishing gear stored on it. Cuts down prep time. But I find myself constantly untangling the 3 rods I use.

There seems to be some question about their compatibility on the site. Some folks are saying they work on older Pro Anglers, and others say they only work with the H-bar. Does anyone know definitively whether they'd work? I'd love to be able to store multiple rods without them getting tangled...kinda defeats the purpose of having the four rod tip protectors in the front of the PA if you can only use one on each side.

Yes...those are the ones I was referring to. Those rod holders definitely work on the older PA rails. My 2015 PA14 came with a set of 2. I purchased an extra set of 2 to use on my 2013 PA14. They work just fine. Hobie advertises that they work on the older round rails. I have found that all of the H-Rail accessories will indeed tighten down on the older round rails.

Here is the H-Rail Universal Mounting plate with a RAM base and rod holder on the 2013 PA14. It holds just fine.



Additionally...I have found that for transport, I put the rods in the right side tubes the normal way and have that rod holder at the right point where I can strap them at the reels. For the left I put the rod butts in the rod tubes and let the rod tips go past the seat. I then put that new rod holder at a point towards the back of the seat (just behind the side pocket) and strap the rods with the holder strap there. Works for me when transporting on the trailer on in the pickup bed.
