I'm using the Battery Tender BTL35A480C Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery. Pretty pricey at $209 but that's less than the $249 I paid for it 18 months ago. Thing weighs less than 2 pounds. I keep it in a Pelican case in the hull under than vantage seat. I power my Elite 5, nav lights and led lights. I don't use the lights much so mainly just powering the fish finder. I can take it out 4 days a week, 4 hours a trip and barely drop below 12.9 volts.

I just started using the same battery, mine is sealed in an ammo box. So far, so good, let us know if you run into any issues with yours, Thanks

Are you guys basically using a usb charging cable to power your ff? I have a 16000mah battery pack we use to charge our phones on the go, never even thouht about using that for the ff/gps. Can you show me the connection to your ff power cable? Thanks.

I drilled a hole in the box and passed the ~2' power cable (I shortened it) through the hole. I'm not at home for a few days so I can't tell you the drill bit size, but it was a snug fit. Then, I pulled a healthy amount into the box and tied an overhand knot to keep tugs on the outside from pulling the cable out. Then I sealed the cable entry with silicone. It may not be water-tight, but it'll slow down water. You do NOT want a lithium battery to get wet.
Then I used wire nuts to attach the power cable to the MALE connectors I ordered a 10-pack of. This is the item I used (You don't want the females as the battery is a female connector) http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XTY ... ge_o00_s00
If I had crimp fittings, I would've used them as a preferred method, but wire nuts were okay. I packed them with silicone too.

When I get home, I can send a pic of two of the battery inside the box which should clear any confusion. I did shorten the male pigtail to about 2" and there's maybe 2" of power cable inside the box. Add 2 wire nuts to the 4" of combined cable/pigtail and there's not a lot of room to get to the power switch on the battery. You do need to turn on the battery itself before you clamp the box shut.

This pic doesn't help a lot, but it may be enough and it's all I can give you from the road. At the right end of the box, you can see 2 orange objects inside, between the Plano lable and the latch. Those are the wire ties. You can just make out the wire coming out of the box on the side facing the FF, near the wire ties.

Hope this helps. I am happy to take more pics when I return Thursday if anyone needs clarification.

No. The battery I bought does not have the USB 5v port, and that's too low to run my FF anyway. I don't bother to take a lot of pics and videos to make other people envy my catch (maybe if I caught more/better fish) so I only needed the 12v port. It's a 2.1x5.5 round connector. You can see the pigtail I used in my previous reply. It's spliced into the FF's original power cord.

I hope this helps. Ask if you need a better answer, I'll do my best to help.

Thanks ElFuego. I will be mounting mine under the rear hatch to replace the lead acid battery. Do you think this will run your FF 8 solid hours ?

Im liking this battery. Ran simulation on my Elite 4 DSI for 5 hours yesterday with screen turned up to max. It was eating about one tenth of a volt every 40 minutes. So i figured just divide that by 2 with transducer running (this is just a guess) and i will get about 6.6 hours of continuous use when the battery gets from 12.5 to 10.5 volts. Not sure what voltage the DSI stops working but if its lower than 10.5 volts that easilly puts it in the 8+ hour range on a pocket size battery.
I rigged mine up with a delphi plug. It will be replacing the lead acid battery for sure.
The actual dimensions on the battery are 5 5/8's" X 3 1/4" x1".....much smaller than advertised...I wonder about the 6000mah but all that matters is it will last all the day long and its looking like it certainly will.
Now that the lead acid is out of the way in the rear hatch i can utilize both sides. Going to velcro this thing to the bottom of the tank well ( roof of the rear storage) completely out of the way....sweeeeeet !

Revise the above info. I charged it up and ran the simulator again today. Its still running at 9 hours and has only lost 9/10's of a volt . Started at 12.5 volts and its just now hit the top side of 11.5 volts.
Also did some research on my Lowrance Elite 4X DSI.
Its runs on 10 to 17 volts. It uses 200mah. The battery operating range is 12.5 volts down to 8.4 volts.
My estimations were about right above but sense the DSI will run down to 10 volts that puts this battery running the DSI for approx 12 hours straight before low voltage. That is pretty awesome for a $29 battery thats 5" long, 3" wide , 1" thick and only weighs 12 oz . I'm impressed....

I am surprised this is not the norm in kayak fishing. I think it will be. I am certainly pleased.

Oh yeah, I think head batteries can catch fire if they get wet. A hot fast-burning fire that could probably disable a kayak quickly. It is probably best to protect them from water by keeping them in a box, even if you store it in the hull.

Got it covered. Just ordered a second for my light kit for when i get around to doing that install. Not sure why its not the norm either. You could take a 3s 6000mah lipo battery and do the same thing .
