Hobie has partnered up with Trailex, and have a great single trailer option (part no 38652000). Order PA 14 cradles separately (part no 72020401).

One last thing, I went out this evening for a few hours after work. Actually went for a few hours before work too. Anyway, the ramp at the small lake was pretty steep and was a great example of why I wanted the ladder rack to be considerably taller than the standard 30". If it was only 30" off the deck of my trailer I could never have wet launched or retrieved my kayak from this ramp. As it was, I had to have the seat down to get it back on the trailer.

I really added the ladder rack as a way to carry another kayak. I have cradles that fit the roof rack as well as my car top rack. I can also just use foam pads on the front and back of the roof rack...basically pool noodles (but black)...and they will allow me to carry almost any type of kayak on top. I use it a lot with my Ascend H12 guest kayak on top, and a little big bird yellow Pelican on top of my SUV. Also, i purchased a waterproof rooftop bag that fits the roof rack very well, and it lets me carry most of my camping/getaway gear above my PA leaving my car interior freed up.

STL,

Thanks for sharing these pictures. That's a really nice setup. Sounds like you have a solid solution for carrying your gear and 3 total kayaks. One of these days I might back my trailer in for launching/recovery.

Very nice setup, just curious have you considered using the cart wheels to help launch? It works great for me with a similar rack on my trailer, I don't have to back the trailer into the water at all.

I have thought about buying the cart, if for nothing else than reaching some water that i cannot get to via road or ramp. But as far as dipping the trailer/wet launching goes, I have very little concern of hurting the trailer. The bearing are sealed, the lights are submersible, and i have rust proofed painted the heck out of it. Any touches of rust, I clean and re-spray pretty fast...but that happens on any steel trailer. I like the simplicity of ramp launching. I have my kayak pretty much loaded to fish, just dump it in the water, and i am off. Just one less step to worry about at MOST of the locations I fish. I can literally back the trailer into the water, throw my PDF and paddle into the kayak, loosen three straps, and I am off.

Last Monday, I moved from a loft in down town St. Louis to the old family farm just outside the city...coincidentally...less than a mile from my fishing club lakes...and with a two kayak garage. The new (100 year old) house affords me the ability to hit the water before and after work, which I have done 4 of the last 5 days. Saving that little bit of time getting the kayak into the water makes a huge difference to me. It may not seem like much, but if I save 15 minutes putting it in and taking it out, that is 30 more minutes on the water before a day slaving in front of a computer screen at work.

I looked, in depth at the Malone, as it is one of the few readily available kayak/sport trailers I could actually see in person. I did not want to fork over the cash. I do agree with Dr.StealHead, the rack system is way to high to make it easy to load/unload. Better than putting it on a roof, but no way to float on/off the trailer. If I had purchased, the first thing I would have done was remove the cross bars brackets - they are just U-Bolted to the frame - and install either the Hobie Cradle or PVC bunks directly to the frame. You could use the same Unistrut method as a lot of others. The only negative, is that you would lose the ability to haul more than one boat with the way it sits now, cross bars over the tires.

We have a Malone trailer for our PA14 and PA12 (his and hers). We needed to lower the Malone's loading height for the height-challenged "her" yet still be able to trailer both yaks at the same time. So, we replaced the U shaped risers and crossbars with 78" Unistrut crossbars on very short Unistrut risers to allow the gray PVC bunks to clear the trailer fenders by about 1". We used a circular saw set at 45 degrees to make the angled cuts on the back ends of the PVC tubes to make loading easier on the hulls. The two yaks are separated by a couple of inches when loaded. We've floated them off very easily several times.

We also upgraded the wiring harness and replaced the stock trailer lights with LED ones. We even added additional signal lights attached to H rail mounting platforms that clip onto the rear H rails on the PAs to make the lights be "in your face" for tailgaters. It's been working really well. It tows like a dream and handles potholes without issue.

Here are some photos we took of our Malone trailer mods. FYI, the yaks in the photos aren't stripped down and strapped for trailering...just for the photo op.

nschutt - I have never seen anyone use that type of mounting plate/bracket for the PVC bunks. Most just put use a thru-bolt to a uni-strut channel nut. What is that setup that you used instead? FYI - the trailer looks great. I might have to steal the idea of the lights on the back H-Bar. I have had a few close calls where people just dont seem to notice the giant red flag hanging off my kayak.

The rear lights on the yaks tie into the trailer lighting so all work together. We'd read about how others had close calls so we wanted to minimize our risks.

The bunk mounting hardware is Unistrut beam clamps with the catch turned outwards to cradle the bunks. We used large fender washers and nuts to attach the bunks to the Unistrut. Here's looking down from above. It makes for easy width adjustments. We also attached some D rings to the ends of the crossbars for attachment points if desired.
