I have two Pro Angler 12, circa 2013. Thus far they have brought me much enjoyment and are very well made. This is the first issue that has caused me months of down time and difficulty. My second, the one I let my guests use, had rudder failure. The wind and rocks caused the rudder to snap off. Rather the rudder mount shaft snapped off just above the rudder. everything was a nightmare. The pin was frozen which secured the rudder shaft to the steering drum. It was impossible to knock the pin out of the rudder shaft and had to be grinded off to remove the broken shaft. I ordered parts as per the parts lists published on line. Nothing was the same. I ordered a rudder mount #84500402, It was different that original part: the hole the pin would pass thru was wider by aprox. 3/32, and the length and position of hole was short compared to original part. I ordered a pin #88991235: it too was wider in diameter by 3/32 than the original part. The steering drum I ordered #84500501 had a grove in it too small to accommodate the aforementioned pin. I reamed out the groove to accommodate the pin. The only part I ordered which fit correctly was sister screw which attached rudder mount to rudder. I was forced to mount the steering drum upside down to use what I had, it wont last long, I feel. I seek guidance from someone who has experienced this issue, or a specialist. Thank you.

Hello all,

I have new information regarding my attempt to obtain parts to repair my kayak. Again, my 2013 Pro Angler was a transitional model. Some things were changed, even the very next year. That's to be expected, Improvements and all.
The crux I face is the rudder mount #84500401. I did try #84500402 (explained in previous post), the 2014 counterpart. I had to refer to my owners manual to find the correct part number. No one has it. At least no one on line. I am now seeking fabricators, possibly CNC equipped; to manufacture the part. I fear it will be very expensive. Another option I am entertaining is to have the broken part MiG welded, and bored out to accept the larger pin. This is the likely choice. Or find someone who might have the same model, parting it out. The steering drum is mounted upside down, it kind of like driving on a temporary tire. I hope to have it resolved soon.

I would be inclined to have the part mig welded and be done with it.
I bought a 2013 PA-14 in September 2012....early built model and did not have any "transitional" rudder parts or steering drum assembly.

Early on, I changed out the original rudder to the sailing rudder because I did a significant amount of time down rig fishing....the tracking was terrible with the original rudder and the sailing rudder that was about 25% larger made all the difference in the world.

The only other change I made was to buy the rudder BOA kit and installed it....the 2014 PA-13 had this feature and was really nice.
The BOA allowed adding or decreasing the internal rudder line tension as the hull warmed or cooled during the day.
