2015 PA12 Rudder/Skeg Cable Issues

I took pics and sent them to my dealer a couple of weeks ago and they sent it on to hobie. I have just stopped using the skeg for now. Still a great kayak. Loving it everyday.

I picked up my new 2015 PA Tuesday morning....haven't messed with the kayak until this afternoon . ..I tried deploying the skeg, and it did not drop by itself . I had to pull it down by hand ...not to happy about that hobie......

Can be a couple of issues. Lines hung up inside. They flop around in transport, so could have gotten a wrap. Take a look inside with a video camera while working the different lines. Could also be expansion of the hull which might squeeze the board. Hot and sealed hull, but that is harder to imagine due to the many possible vents.

Just wanted to update yall. My dealer contacted me today be hobie is putting together a field repair video or a better aid repair for skeg line issues. They sent me a preliminary repair document from Hobie. They will send me a better lid out version once they receive it.

I just want to say even though there was an issue that hobie didn't catch at first they actually looked into and and came up with a solution. To me that is great customer service! Some people may think there should have never been an issue, but that's unrealistic to me. No one can design or be 100% prefect , but how they strive to do it better is what counts. No only if car manufactures had better service...

Thanks hobie cat! You got you a life long customer and will continue recommending you to other watersports bothers.

I'm sure my opinion doesn't matter lol. Just like to give compliments when deserved.

Good news indeed!

I wonder how other 2015 PA owners can get the same information. Haven't had my new one out yet but it would be nice to install any updated part(s) before any damage is done at all.

BTW, great job Hobie! Good customer service is what keeps people happy. It's nice to realize some companies still understand how it should be done.

Have to agree with Gladly, would like to prevent the problem on my new 2015 before it happens. I haven't had the chance to put it inthe water yet.

Is this going to be a dealer repair or a do it yourself fix? My 2015 PA12 has never touched the water yet and fishing season is about start.

Engineers are still working on the details, but this could be done by an owner if desired.

Hi , I also purchased a PA 12 and are starting to have issues with the skeg not going down and have only been out a few times so far, you can move it freely when on a stand but sticks when lowered with the pull line I will be taking a better look at it this week end to see if it is wearing as well. not sure about grease on the line as I launch from beaches often and afraid of sand get on it and making matters worse has hobie come up with any thing yet ?

The re-routing of the skeg line is fairly simple, anyone can do it. We have made a short video showing how it's done. Takes about :15 to do the swap. To the poster above, if it's just tight and doesn't want to come down - it can be debris from sand on the beach, also the actual pivot bolt and pulley may just be too tight - you will need to flip your kayak on its side or upside-down and check that it freely springs down, if it's not then pull the skeg out of the hull and check that it's not just over tight on the pivot bolt. Not likely that it would be - it might be caused from the line routing issue that folks on this thread are talking about (go back and look through the earlier posts to get up to speed - just take a look under the cover plate to check if the line has chafed.
Again - if you have an issue with any Hobie product and it's under warranty have a dealer take a look directly.

I just picked my 2015 PA 14 up last weekend and took it home to rig it up, it has not see water yet. I put the large rudder on and when I took off the steering drum cover I found the line cut into the hole as other here have. I'm new so can someone tell me how to attach a photo.

Not yet ready... maybe today.

well I checked the areas of skeg and the same issue is happening with wear so I removed the skeg to inspect it and found as I loosened the screws holding it in the skeg dropped freely on its own seems to be some alignment issue with the holes you could watch it squeeze the plastic together as you tighten the screws back causing it to bind and hang up . not sure if this will wear in or be fore the cable cuts deeper in to the hule and bushing
