Hello -

A few months ago my rudder seized up on my 2014 pa 14. I went through my dealer and (after a few times explaining what was happening) finally received replacement parts, including the larger rudder as part of the package. Hobie covered all under the warranty - thanks Hobie!

Fast forward to today when I finally had time to install the new brass sleeve and rudder. However, it appears that the rudder post that goes up through the brass sleeve is designed differently than my old one, and does not fit into my steering drum properly. the hole for the pin is flush with the top surface of the kayak, so when I place the drum on the post, the hole for the pin does not line up with the hole in the stainless steel post. I suspect there was a redesign.

Do I need an new steering drum? If so, what is the best (fastest) way to get one.

Thank you -

Beth

One more note on this - the pin provided with the new assembly ais about twice the diameter of the old pin. The old pin was not a solid piece of steel but was instead a piece rolled into a pin, so less sturdy. It is clear that these are different parts and I'm just trying to figure out what I need to get this darned thing back in the water.

I'm coming here because my dealer has not been super helpful with this problem. At first they said that hobie told them to just pull the old rod out of the old brass sleeve and then grease the parts. But the whole point was that they were seized up, so they could not get the parts separated. After a few weeks of them "waiting to hear back from Hobie," they finally said they ordered the replacement part. Now the part that I finally received after a couple months of dickering around with them does not work. I'd prefer not to try to work through the dealer any longer if at all possible.

I found this picture in another thread. This is how my new post and pin sit. But that is not what my steering drum look like. The slot for the pin is on the top side of the drum rather than the bottom.

Beth,
Your PA-14 must have the "pre-2013" rudder installed, as shown on page 5 of the owners manual http://static.hobiecat.com/digital_asse ... manual.pdf

Are you sure your PA-14 is a model year 2014?.....the last two digits of serial number denote the model year......it's found on the stern and "engraved by hand".
That would be very odd for Hobie to have installed the earlier rudder on a 2014 PA, otherwise someone must have swapped out the current rudder assembly for the older/pre-2013 rudder assembly on you PA-14.

Oops, yes you are correct, it is a 2013 model.

So does that mean they sent me the wrong assembly? I'm certain they know I have a 2013 because I provided the serial number to them when this was all going down last yeasr. Arrrrggggghhhhh.

Thank you for your response, dr. steelhead.

Beth, My 2013 PA-14 rudder drum assembly is just like the photo you posted and that is what your PA should have as well.
If your PA-14 is different, suggest contacting Matt Miller directly about the issue. He is very good resolving problems.

Yes, two different vintages... The post is the newer and may be all we have these days. The drum is the older, so you will need a newer version drum as shown in the parts diagrams.

84500502 RDR STEERING DRUM (SCREW TYPE)
8030126 SCREW 10-32 x 3/8 FLNG BTN HX

Thank you Matt. I've ordered the parts and should have them in a few days. And thanks to http://tackleshack.com/ for having a good inventory of spare parts!
