Trailering PA17t

So i just took delivery of my PA 17T and i got the cheaper stick trailer and want to mod it to put a rack and maybe a box on it.

Questions anybody our there have this kind of trailer with a rack?


Second question you guys with vantage seats anyone have a box they store them in? They take up half my bed so i am looking to mount a box on the trailer for them.

One suggestion about trailering your yak. Make sure to tie fore and aft ties to keep it from sliding forward or backward. don't learn this the hard way. Good Luck

They are there just hard to see.

I am still working out details on the rack for my outfitter. The spacing on cradles is about 72 inches. If I mount the rack to those cross bars that would leave about 3 foot on each side of hang over for the outfitter. Which I think is fine but finding a box that is light and 6 foot to hold 4 mirage drives, 2 vantage seats and other rigging might not happen... Ideas? Trying to keep it all on the trailer to free up the bed for other gear.

Might want to check the laws in your state. Here you have to have lights on anything that extends 4 ft past the end of a trailer or vehicle ............. Several guys got surprise tickets here ........ Just sayin

Yep same here I'll have to measure it as it's probably close. I could also put a flag on it. Also when I build my rack I might move the lights up so they say out of the water.

A flag is ok for daytime but here they require lights at night ...... That's how the guys got tagged

Why not use the existing cross bars and have a machine shop fab up something like I have on my trailer to put a rack and or box over the top?





Do you HAVE to remove the Vantage seats for transport? I currently have a 2010 PA14 and love the fact that I simply slide the boat on the trailer and drive off. No need to unload everything. I'm about to buy a 2015 PA14 and was hoping that I could secure the Vantage seat in a way that it wouldn't need to be removed during trailering. I really don't have any more room in my tow vehicle for anything else at this point!

Here is my approach solving the "overhang and visibility issue".....As shown in this photo, I moved the lights from the trailer frame to a 2 x 2 board and used "u" clamps with wing nuts to attach on the aft carrying handle of my PA-14.
An 18" trailer light "pig tail" makes the connections. The lights never get submerged and are elevated for better visibility by the traffic behind me.....I think I spent $15 for all the stuff.

Measured 32 inches so i am ok with the over hang. I am going to put some reflective tape on the back of the PA and move the light up on whatever rack i build. That will keep them out of the water too.

That is what i intend to do but use all three cross bars with 4 foot side boxes on the first two over the wheels. Just need to find a local welder to fab them up. I am thinking aluminum and just bolt to the frame don't know if you can weld steel to galvanized steel or not.

You don't have to remove the seats but i will so they don't get stolen as there is only one clip holding them in. I also don't want them in for long highway trips.

Looking to do same thing with the TI. I would like to mount all of our bikes overtop the kayak for camping trips. Only difference is I would like the ability to remove the upper rack for most of the time.

My 2015 PA12 has a strap under the seat for tackle boxes. That strap works perfect for putting on top of the vantage seat when transporting the PA on my trailer.

Yes it does require putting the seat in the low position and I fold the seatback forward and down. No problems so far.

I think the seats are different. I check later but i just got done dorking with openscad drawing up trailer options.



First one is with the box idea i would make the front crossbar removable when i didn't have the outfitter on top.


Second option both would be removable and i would just get a big gear bag and strap it to the deck of the PA. Either way the seats are either in the boat or in the truck as i couldn't find a big enough box for them.

Excuse the messy CAD just roughing in ideas.

Are you getting the same trailer from dawn/mike?

I believe so. I think it's a crazy 20', so a little longer than yours.

Something like your second option only a little closer together. I was thinking pins to attach it to the trailer and hinges on the corners so I could fold it flat. I'm not looking at putting as much weight on top as you are.
