I am wrestling with the "Buy and Hold" vs "Sell and Upgrade" dilemma. I love my 2010 PA14, and it is in fine shape, but the longer I hold onto it, the greater the gap between resale value and new cost becomes. To be honest, I am having a real hard time determining fair market value for a used PA because there are so few ever listed on CR or EBay or elsewhere around where I live and local dealers do not take trade-ins.

So... Time for a survey that should help all of us when considering resale. I propose something simple for those who have actually sold one:

1) PA12 or PA14?
2) How old was your PA when you sold it?
3) Approximately what % of original cost (including purchase cost of any add-ons and upgrades that were thrown into the sale) did you get back in resale?
4) What condition (Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor) was your yak in when sold?
5) In what geographic region did you sell your PA?

Not sure if this will get to reasonably estimating resale values, but it's a start.

My first Hobie Pro Angler 14 was a 2013 I purchased in 2014 for $2500. It was in excellent condition. The other person had used it 5 times. When the 2015s came out I liked the upgrades Hobie made so I decided to try to sell it to see what I could get. So I put it in CL in the spring of 2015. Sold it for $2500 no problem here in New England. It sold quickly. The good part is that I kept the accessories (rod holders, wheel cart, etc.) that had originally come with the 2013 to use on my new one.

The Pro Angler 14 seems to make more sense to me as the extra space comes in handy. I'm one of those guys who brings everything but the kitchen sink. I will add that I move it around on a trailer. I've had 3 back surgeries, lifting is not an option for such a heavy yak.

Good luck with your research.

For me, the decision of "sell price" all came down to how badly I wanted to get into a new Hobie and at what cost I was comfortable with spending. I was selling a 2011 Outback with sail/cart,etc in order to upgrade to a 2013 AI. Fortunately for me my dealer was having their EOY sale on their demos- prices I couldn't turn down. I wasn't worried about selling myself short $200-$400 & just wanted to make sure I got the Outback sold and into an AI! Sold in 3 weeks & I had the satisfaction of not only making myself the happiest man alive, but also the person who got a great deal from me :)

Good luck!

Although I can't help you with the 'sold' side of things, I can with the 'bought' side.

1. PA14
2. 2012 model (4 years old)
3. n/a unfortunately, as I don't know what was paid for it new, but my purchase price was $1800 (this was the owner's asking price and I didn't negotiate as I felt it was more than fair compared to what other PA's in my area were going for, and the condition/ad-ons of the PA)
4. Very good (no cracks/repairs, all gear in working condition, minor rash/scratches)
5. Central Texas

And... I'd also add:

6. Any extra gear you are thinking of selling it with (as this definitely affects the price). Mine came with the Hobie HD cart, Lowrance Elite 4X HDI with transducer and battery, a few Scotty rod holders, and a mast replacement/repair kit with a new replacement fin.

In my area just about every 2013-14 PA14 is going for a minimum of $2500 (condition/ad-ons being considered), with only a slightly smaller price for the PA12's. 2015-16 used PA14's are still hitting the $3000+, but with some nice gear included (fish finder/cart/H-bar/etc...). Older PA's in good condition are still hitting the $2k mark (most about $2200) which is amazing. Apparently Hobies in Texas are made of gold...
