I am going to be headed on a glorious 12 day fishing trip starting on the 12th of May. First stop is Kentucky Lake and the annual Dover Boys fishing trip - some might say fiasco - but it is always a good time. From there I am going to see where the fishing takes me, all i know is that I will not be back in St. Louis until the 24th.

Anyway, i want to put together a repair/emergency kit, so nothing keeps me off the water. Looking for suggestions for what to include, the smallest suggestion might make a huge difference between spending the day on the water, or spending the day tracking down some mindless part.

So far, i have the following in my 'repair' dry bag...

2 - fins
2 - masts with pins and rings
1 - sprocket
1 - chain
1 - harbor freight channel lock
1 - harbor freight multi-screw driver
1 - small bottle blue loctite
1 - marine goop

...any suggestions would be appreciated. What did you need that you forgot?

I've never taken mine on a road trip, but it sounds like fun. I don't know if you trailer your PA or not, but the obvious thing for my trailer is a spare. Heaven forbid if my trailer becomes totally inoperable, I also carry a bed extender with me. I will leave the trailer on the side of the road, but I'm not leaving my PA :D.

Not really repair but I also make sure to have an extra pair of sunglasses. Since I always buy my fishing license online, I'm able to save it to a pdf and print off 2 copies. One to carry with me and one that stays in the truck.

Good luck and tight lines.

That is exactly what I am looking for. Sunglasses...I need to pickup a new pair of polarized sun glasses! I always think about it while on the lake and blinded by the reflection, but once back on land...poof, gone from my head.

I am starting a list.

I realize that except for emergency on water repairs, I can leave most of the stuff in my SUV. I have a respectable but compact tool set, every type of pad eye, hook, screw, or rivet I could possible use...also in a small kit. My first aid kit is sparse, but enough to get me back to shore...and if duct tape won't fix it or cover it until shore, I am probably going to die anyway.

What else?

1. Rudder pin. Remove the service plate over the rudder steering drum and look to see if your rudder axle is held on by a roll pin or a cotter pin. If a roll pin, IT WILL COME OUT at some time. You will not lose the rudder, but you will lose steering. If you have the roll pin, I would recommend getting a few SS cotter pins and replacing the roll pin with one, keeping the extras with you in case of trouble.

2. Extra idler cable.

The best part about having all this extra gear is that it practically guarantees you will not need it! Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Have a good trip!

Jim_MI........My 2013 PA-14 has neither the roll pin or cotter pin you described holding the rudder drum to the axle.
My PA has a SS Allen head machine screw to make the attachment.
Perhaps the original PA's has the attachment you described??

Doc - My PA14 is a 2010 and came with a roll pin (that failed). Glad that they redesigned it.

I took the rudder hatch off this weekend and forgot to look how the assembly was attached. I know I did not see a cotter pin, so pretty sure the new boats have the SS screw. I was a little surprised that the rudder cable looks suspiciously like braided fishing line. I have found braided line to be remarkably strong, in fact it has gotten me in trouble before in my old kayak, as when I wanted it to break, it would not! But I have also found that it frays fairly easy, causing failure. Any issue with this line fraying?

I would think it would be a beast of a job replacing one of the rudder cables! Wondering if I can just use some 50# braided fishing line if it did!
