can you sail a getaway in a h16 class race? as they are both 16ft, but the H16 has a bigger sail area. does it work if the getaway gets a handicap?

The Getaway is much slower than a Hobie 16, so it's not fair for them to race head-to-head.

Hobie Class Association races are one-design, meaning that boats of each type race each other, without any handicapping system. In those races, you'd be racing against other Getaways.

However, there are a lot of other races out there that use a handicapping system (usually the Portsmouth Number system) so that different boats can race head-to-head.

Unfortunately, handicapping systems aren't perfect. Who wins often depends on the wind conditions than the skill of the sailor. Also, the Portsmouth Number for a given boat depends on race data, which is pretty thin for the Getaway.

Hi, I have raced my Getaway against H 16s and other types of cat,
but theses races have been distance races: around Shelter Is. NY
the Portsmouth No. was used. Last year I won the B Division and
I think would have been 3rd overall. Part luck, part skill, around a 4
1/2 hour race which may have helped me also some light air spots.
so my experiences have been positive but limited. If you course race
the RC has to take everyones time and then do a bunch of figuring,
which is why people like 1 design.. doug

I raced my Getaway at an Alter Cup Qualifier a few years back against a bunch of 16s and A Class. I filled the coolers full of beer! I aggressively started with the fleet like I was in contention, and half way up the course, I sailed back to the start line and cracked a cool-one. When the top finishers came through the line, I tossed them a beer.

Use your boat to its top potential.

Don't even try to race against in a H16 group.
The Getaway will not point up enough to be competitive, so it is not even fun.
When casually sailing with other 16s, the Getaway is slightly slower but that's not a big problem, however, in a race the difference becomes very obvious.

As Jeremy said, use the boat to its real potential!
