Funny Story

This story takes place over 2 separate occassions and one week in between: 1 week ago my son and I went out on his first real sailing lesson. As we approached the ramp/dock at the end of the day, I took the helm and instructed my son to simply step onto the dock and hold us once I get us stopped there. Well, as I was jockeying between a jet ski on one side and power boat on the other, my son decided it was time to "be on the dock". We were still a good 3 feet from the dock. He dove. All I could say was: "there he goes - here I go". He belly flopped onto the dock (1/2 way on, I might add - ouch), and of course the equal and opposite reaction, I was sent back out. I was lucky to avoid the other craft and get back to the dock where my son could grab the shroud and secure us. Whew.
Fast forward to a few days ago. We went back out with a couple of his friends aboard. At the end of the day (you can see where this is going), we are heading back into that same dock/ramp. Well, of course the boys are all joking about my son's last escapade at the dock and I just could not help myself in joining in the fun. We were on a beam reach heading straight into the ramp area nearing the end of the dock with everyone laughing and joking about my son's dock flop the week prior. So I said, you know, as we approach that ramp, I'll need someone to jump off and stop us. No sooner had the words come out of my mouth, than "off he goes!" Beautiful belly flop right next to the boat. He and the boat beached themselves perfectly on the ramp right next to each other. He received cheers from the 20+ people lining the shore right there.
I have since apologized for having fun with him. But there is a brilliantly bright silver lining in this. I learned something about him on those two trips. If only while sailing, he listens intently and acts immediately. Awsome!! I know I can count on him in a crisis. He now knows dad will never say something (even in jest) that might cause him to act when he shouldn't. Taught me to go over everything PRIOR to the event.
