These look like fun, sort of like the I14, but you don't have to return with all your crew on board to win the race - you just have to stay afloat

The Bermuda Fitted Dinghy is

...14 feet 1 inch. No decking is allowed and the keel is limited to 12 feet. All fitted dinghies have a 14-foot bowsprit, 40 foot masts and over 1000 feet of sail - more sail than any other vessel of similar length. Race rules allow the skipper to order as many people as he wishes off the boat, to gain speed. They usually depart from the stern, to give the boat a bonus in speed. There are only eight fitted dinghies. Five race on alternate Sundays from May 24 until September, in various parts of Bermuda.

They are Elizabeth, Challenger, Contest, Port Royal and Victory. The world-renowned sailor and sail designer Uffa Fox did not believe the vessel would float. But it did. The six people in a crew must improvise for survival and seamanship. They jibe from port to starboard for prevailing winds, try to keep upright, and can take on much water. To keep afloat, they jump or get pushed off. They have high speeds but are often sunk or are dismasted. Luck and talent win. They are always entertaining and often hilarious.

Alamitos Bay Yacht Club just hosted the I-14 Worlds. These are pretty rockin boats for monohulls. There was plenty of carnage especially on the windy days. We had about 80 competitors and the line was split in the middle to accomodate the race committee in calling OCS.

The OG pic is of team Pegasus. They race locally here in SC and we get a chance to spar off with that exact boat from time to time. (We actually built the trailer for that boat). I Sail an FX ONE with spi. In light wind they can get me on most points of sail. When the wind comes up it's game on! We are pretty matched up wind, they can point slightly higher. And down wind they can point lower. I can blast them on a broad reach. We usually just shadow them with no course in mind, so it would be interesting to see what would happen around a course. So overall it's a pretty fast boat, but to obtain that speed those guys have to practise A LOT! And, you should see the dancing on the boat. It's a ton of work. If you think it's hard to get crew on your Hobie just be happy that you don't need 2 other guys that are flexible, strong, top notch athletes that don't care about pitchpoling at 20 kts from 10' feet off the water. On the FX, I am is control at these speeds and it's just me!
I don't even want to get into rigging time. It takes them 2 hours with about 6 people! No joking!

Well, you can be sad about your boat not making the list, but mine did, I would rather not be on it than be second from last. But I was just wondering, the Hobie 14 is rated pretty low. I have a 14T and I know that solo I can out run alot of the cats on there. That just seems odd to me, maybe it is my imagination but I have gone head to head with a 16 with two guys on it and have usually outrun them. Do they just suck or is my boat really faster?

LOL well almost everything on the lake is faster than my getaway, its a great comfortable boat but a speed demon its not. When I had my 16 I quite regularly outran the 14T's. So much of it depends on the boat, the conditions, and of course the skipper.

Huh, that is interesting. I know that a soloed 16 will out run me but not by much. But once there are two people on one they are slower than me. But like you said it can all depend on the boat, skipper, and conditions.

Anyway you look at it you are having fun no matter what boat you are on.
