Mainsheet cleat

Has anyone taken their mainsheet cleat off? I broke mine and was thinking about just leaving it off. It also seems whenever I cleat the main, I can't get it uncleated in time to prevent a capsize...

I would die without my cleat! If it is so hard to uncleat adjust the angle that the cleat sets at. I have mine set so it is hard to cleat and easy to uncleat. That is how it is supposed to be.

I would try to adjust it first rather than take the cleat off. Also what broke I am sure there is someone who can help.

Do you have a ratchet block? If not, that would be a worthwhile upgrade. I put one on my Wave, and hardly find the need to cleat anymore. Plus it allows me to release immediately without the need to snap out of the cleat. However, I do turn the ratchet off light to moderate conditions, when I do cleat.

I would upgrade and fix cleat.

what boat do you have? I would always have a cleat on, I cleat it for upwind and sail, I use the rudders to control the hull flying.

Yes, I have a ratchet block, and love it very much. I'm used to sailing wihtout cleats (Laser, 420, etc), and was taught to never cleat the main while sailing.

I just got the boat and the cleat (about 30 years old) is corroded on the inside. Pretty much FUBAR.

Does anyone know what size/part number the Harken cleat is? I want the one with metal teeth.

As for you talking about the Big T here, I don't care...actually I sail a non-hobie boat. But most of the knowledge transfers well from boat to boat.

How is the Tornado doing, didn't you buy it just a while back? I would love to have it and am jealous if you found it at a good price.

I agree with Brad. Cleat and drive. Only dump the main for big gusts.

The part is a Harken H150. That's Harken's standard size cam cleat. It'll be about $25 or so I'd guess. www.sunjammers.com will set you up.

Nothing wrong sailing without a cleat so long as you've got an extra set of hands with you..I've heard lots of people say they rarely cleat the main (racing at least). If you ever plan on doing anything single handed though you'll have some problems.

Maybe it's not your cleat. Maybe your sheet is too large. That will make it difficult to uncleat.
