LOL, Small world! I live in Harlingen :)

I think you're right. I'm just going to set my eyes on the Wave and stay there. May take me awhile before I'm out on the water, but at least I'll be in what I want and what will serve me the best out of my options.

Thanks Indy. Next time you're down..BRING THE WAVE and give me a call, heh.

My wife and I are trying to decide when to make the trip down there next. Harlingen is a LOONNGG way from here, especially if hauling a boat (and gas at $3.45/gal)! I've only flown down, although my brothers have both driven it. Do you live there year 'round? My folks live in one of those gated RV parks, and most of their neighbors have left for the summer.

Not to talk you out of a Wave now, but have you seen the posts on the Hobie Kayaking forum, from the guy in Corpus Christi trying desparately to sell his Adventure Island? I think those look like fun too, but it's only a 1-person boat.

Yep. The WAVE is an excellent choice.

On Saturday, here in Southern California, the wind was P E R F E C T.

It was blowing on (2) fronts: right off the beach it was a Santa Ana hot wind, blowing out to sea at about 20 with gusts going up to 30. I was going so fast, flying a hull some of the time, that a coast guard boat, with his sirens on, going full bore, wasn't passing me.

Then there was this twilight zone little buffer between the two fronts where the winds sort of swirled.

On the outside of that was the constant, cool, prevailing coastal winds at about 10 - 15 blowing towards the beach, in the opposite direction.

I zig zagged between the two fronts, passing the "twilight zone" repeatedly, screaming through the Santa Anas until I was tired, cruising through the coastals to rest, back to the Santa Anas.

GAZOOKS what a blast. I was chortling, laughing out loud and grinning ear to ear.

I can't imagine having more fun in any other boat.

Cory: That sounds amazing....Just a total blast. Glad you had a good day out.

Indy: I know what you mean. I'm heading to MI this summer to visit my wifes family. Looks like we're flying :) Just too expensive to drive. I live here year round. The deal with that AI looks really good..but I just think I'd be better off buying a sailboat as opposed to a kayak that can sail. If I get all my money together and it's still up for sail(get it :P) I will look into it.

My wife and I have been talking/arguing about this recently. Seems like I may just get the Bravo. The Wave is so much more of a boat...but she seems to think it'll just be me going, and getting a bigger boat would be for not. I dunno, I think the Wave is just better all around for the money.

For the money, I could buy the Bravo, and get an old 17 or 18 in great shape with trailer and still come out spending less money. My dad chimed in on that idea, get a sunfish and an old cat and come out WAY ahead, lol. Bravo would be for me. If I go with 3 or more, then take the bigger boat.

I still have lots of time to decide. I'll be gone all of June anyhow. So first purchase won't be until July at the earliest. I called the guys up in Austin(6 or so hour drive, but closest dealer), they seem like nice guys. I might head up there sometime and try setting up both boats...see what I like.

My location to sail is 30-45 minutes away. The Gulf of Mexico. I have a very large bay that's beautiful. Only issue is a lot of it is shallow..2-5 feet...but crystal clear. The plan is to do most of my sailing there, but also play around in the ocean on good days once I know what I'm doing

Your story from this quote on is pretty much same as me, though different location.

I don't think you are indecisive at all. If all the choices were tied up to a dock, I assume any buyer would want to sail them all for the experience before buying. And if that option isn't available, then you shop specs as you are doing.

Yep, sounds about right.

Prob gonna get a Wave and then if a used performance boat in tolerable condition for solo sailing happens along, snag it.

I have some in my tribe with the thrill-seeker gene that are also novices. If I got a H16, either they or it wouldn't be around for long.

Corey and Indy, thanks for the details.

I just came from the new Hobie dealer in town, and saw a Bravo in person for the first time. That is a pretty big boat, bigger than I expected. Even though it is about the same length as a Sunfish (they had them side-by-side), the hull(s) is about the same height (thickness) as a Wave hull. To me, it looked heavy. It has a carry handle on each corner, and I could see those being needed. It is bound to be akward to move single-handed.

Gdbyrd, I think getting one in and out of a truck bed by yourself might be tough. You would certainly need some kind of dolly.

Ouch...Thanks for the heads up Indy. I saw my neuro doc on Thursday afternoon. Looks like I have a neuromuscular disease, so the fatigue issue is going to be a permanent problem for me. Still some final deciding to be made, but it looks like that is where I'm headed.

So I may not buy a boat at all this year. Might wait it out and see how I'm going to do. Going to keep an open mind and all that...but I have to be realistic too.

Just keep my eyes open for now and wait around a bit. Be a good way to slow down my eagerness to buy what first comes in my way, heh. If I wait and all is well, this time next year I'd have enough for a Wave and a Bravo with trailers :P

Sorry to hear that, Gdbyrd. Sailing could be a cure!

Thanks to thoroughly painstaking research (finalized by coin flippage), and partly due to Indy's and Cory's comments, I'm pretty happy so far with my new Wave with the recommended Carnai trailer. Efficient setup. Picked it up last week.

Ordered the traveler kit as well in hopes of keeping the bow up.

Hehe, no worries. I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, it's chronic. But, at least it won't kill me. Gotta do the best with the hand you're dealt.

Grats on the Wave JJ. GREAT looking boat and they are so highly regarded. Happy sails :)

Hey gdbyrd, my wife and I are flying to Harlingen this Sunday, but I don't think they'll let me carry the Wave on the plane. (I tried to PM you, but that function isn't working for some reason.) Actually, we're flying in to pack up my parents, put them on the plane for Indiana, then we'll drive their car back up. My Dad is in poor health, and my Mom wants to get him home, for good. So they're selling their home in Harlingen, probably never to return. Do you know anyone who wants a good used golf cart?

I was hoping to make one last trip over to South Padre Island, to look for Hobie activity, but probably won't have time. Any progress on your condition? Any progress toward buying a boat?

Bill
