Kyle,
Glad you had a good time. What's the water temperature? (59 here) The thicker boots sound like a great idea, do you have to dump the water out? Do you have winter sailing gloves?
John
The water temp in Washington is between 40 to about 55 degrees Fahrenheit. ahhh brisk. You do have to dump the water out of my boots but I count that as a good thing. There are boots with a hole that lets out the water but I prefer my boots much more because, operating on the basic principles of a wetsuit, the layer of water warms of and keeps me toasty. With a boot that vents water you receive less of an opportunity to stay warm and mostly just foot protection. But yeah, I could use my boots in a bucket brigade.
One tip about boots: you can either tuck the bottom of your suit into you boots or layer it over the top. I find, counterintuitively, that layering the suit over the boots keeps less water from venting in and out freely. keeps you warmer.
I don't have the gloves. I wear chintsy little fingerless neoprene kayaking gloves (if that makes a difference). They have a leather palm which functions fine for grip and such. Fingerless is important for knots etc. These gloves work well to keep my hands warm. They cover the center of the palm which happens to be a center of arteries going out the the hands (traditional chinese whatever one would call it, says it is a center of chi or something (it is indeed warmer than the rest of my hand)). I noticed when I took them off I got colder.
Hope that rant helps
