It looks like the nose-cone pops off and a parachute comes out, just like the Estes model rockets? Then the body tube floats vertically and bobs around till the recovery ship arrives?

Actually, I think the major cone section that contains the chutes' is seperated from the tube body at sea. In one photo you can see it's still attached, and they use to jib crane on the back of the ship to hoist it aboard. The end point of the cone falls off and sinks in the ocean.

In the photo where the SRB is lying on it's side with the nozzle the nozzle end visible, you can see what looks like a steering wheel. That's really part of a plug they install to allow them to pump in air and allow the SRB to ride horizontal while being towed.

I really like the photo of the bird on the pad with the moon in the background. I have to tell you, a night liftoff of the Shuttle is so freaking bright it'll blind you staring at the flame. It's almost like the breaking of dawn the way it lights up the area.
