Hello, we go a Hobie 16 for free and were able to get all the standing and sail rigging up over the weekend and took it out for a spin. There is a pin at the bottom of the mast that we used when setting up - does this pin stay in or come out when using the boat?

the pin comes out, so that the mast can rotate, there should be a line tied to the pin so it inst lost. i call it a stepping pin because it is only used in stepping the mast. 8) always put the pin back in when taking the mast down, if not it will just fall and you will be in a world of pain if it hits you.
