I'm looking at buying a hobie cat online. The person selling it knows very little about boats. She advertised it as a Hobie Cat 18'. I pulled this serial number off the transoms of the hulls CCMQ1477M81J. (It appeared to be scratched into the hulls by hand.)

According to the title dept CCMQ1477M81J is a 16' Hobie Cat. You would think that the title dept would be right, but the handwritten numbers are causing me a little bit of concern.

Is there an easy way for me to verify the length of the boat? (The boat is about an hour away, so I can't measure the length of the hulls.)

All the pictures of Hobie 18s that I have seen show a daggerboard. I didn't see any daggerboards or slots for daggerboards on this boat. Is that conclusive?

Sail Colors - Carumba
Sail# 65394
Serial Number: CCMQ1477M81J

Thanks in advance.
Robert

Walt,

If you have seen a picture of it and there are no Dagger Boards and the registration dept. says it's a 16, I would also conclude it to be a 16. As for the hand carved serial #'s that is how Hobie does it. The 81 in the serial #'s represent the year. So this boat is a 1981. Hope this helps.

Serial numbers are hand engraved. I don't show "Q" as used in the serial number on the H16, but may simply be a mistake in my list.

The H16 is VERY different looking from an 18. Bannana shape hulls and a raised trampoline, no daggers.

With a sail number a sail number of 65394 in 1981, I'd say H16.
