Navigation Lights

My point was that when a flashlight is all that is required (as IS the law in Indiana), an illuminated sail is a bonus. It is much more visible than the single point of a flashlight beam, and is recognizable as a sailboat (or at least something different) against most backgrounds, and gives an indication of direction of travel. That is the goal of navigation lights; but it still requires responsible & attentive skippers on both sides, travelling at reasonable speeds, for any system to work. And the more lights you add on your boat, the less you can perceive other lights or obstacles at a distance.

My point with Bismarck Dinius vs. the criminal Deputy Perdock and the drunken teenager is that no amount of light can overcome all cases of bad skippering. If the driver is passed out (probably the case in both instances) or has no concern of endangering other boaters (as was blatant with Perdock), all the lights of Times Square won't make a difference.

Plus remember on this forum we're talking about boats with no motor, no internal battery and no wiring for lights.

By the way, the actual USCG regulation for lighting (as copied from the above linked website):

A sailing vessel of less than 7 meters in length shall, if practicable, exhibit the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) or (b) of this Rule, but if she does not, she shall have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision.
