Tunes on a Hobie?

While in Hawaii over the winter I took an 'eco-tour' on a large catamaran off the shores of Waikiki beach. The skipper played a variety of local music throughout the two hour ride which added a whole new dimension to the sailing experience.

I am curious if anyone here has come up with a waterproof way to experience tunes on a Hobie. Waterproof MP3 player? Waterproof boombox strapped to the tramp?

Curious minds need to know.

and velcro the box to your tramp.

and add these to your wings (if you have them) if not you'll need to improvise a way to clamp them to your frame or cross bar.

They have a 95db sensitivity, so they should give you plenty of sound w/ the T amp

Funny you should ask, I have been sailing many years and not many folks sail with tunes.... but a Buddy of mine and I used to do it all the time. Sony makes a SPLASH proof boom box and it works just fine . We just bungied our box's to our cool cats. They won't take submersion, or really big waves, but a little duck tape here and silicone there and ya gotts tunes !!

There are some neat products out there that offer waterproof ability with an iPod. Many are meant for swimmers and are 'headphone only' use, but if you could find something like this and a good way to strap it to the boat it could work.

I use the "Icy Tunes". Works pretty good. I wrapped the speakers in plastic.

It's nice because I bring drinks (sometimes beer), lunch, and there's a compartment where I keep binoculars, compass, knife tool, keys, phone and wallet. Plus I keep my camera in the top compartment, and misc. stuff in the side netting.

I like it.

BTW...

If conditions are good to great, I leave the Icy Tunes at home or in the car and just take my mp3 player with a Pelixan Waterproof case and ear buds.

I just buy the cheap $20.00 mp3 players, on quiet days I just stuff the player in my life jacket. On really windy days I don't want the distraction of the noise anyway. If I lose it or it gets soaked so it doesn't work anymore I just go buy another one. I usually go thought two a year, hell that's only 40 bucks a yr.

I found that a $19.99 MP3 player, a $9.99 booster speaker, and Ziploc worked well enough for North Americans last year.
It weighed in at less than a pound, and I could hear it fine if we were just sitting around.
Being in a ziploc kept it water proof even when it fell over. And it floated!

Here's another important point that seems to have been missed in the above threads.
Not everyone else on the water wants to listen to your music.
Keep the volume low and you'll be safer and more respectful of the other boaters.

Nice call Old School. There is a mountain behind my house I hike up a few times a week, and there is nothing worse than some chowder head who comes along with a hand held radio creating 'audio pollution'.

I can see where tunes might be nice on a boat, but I don't think I will have a radio on mine for a long time.

If you don't think music and nature are copacetic then you have a hole in your soul. Music and sailing go together perfectly because you can chose the music to fit the situation. As far as "bothering" other sailors; let me see if I understand this, putting a semi naked girl out on a wire is ok but a little Beatles is a distraction? What ever! Sail with me and you not only get tunes, you get me singing too!

iPod and buds on the cat, big stereo on the keel boat.

In sailing, as with skiing, tunes have there place, but U must be extra vigilant visually. Personally, being primarily a solo'r, I like the quiet solitude of the sound of the wind and water.
