Sorry for the late response.

They are great when you're new to the spinnaker, have crew on board, or it's honking. It's almost the position you'd be in when trapping so it takes 15+ before you need to trap. For newbies with a spi, gives a little more confidence until you can handle bigger winds. I'm actually not out on them as much now as I was to begin with.

Downside, they are heavy.

P.s. came with the boat -that had very little use.
p.p.s great to see some interest on this forum. It is a great boat that I don't see anyone interested in for some reason.

I always thought the hull design of the fx looked so crazy. It almost looks like a turtled 18 when sailing. You know, the way it is convex on the top sides, or at least it looks that way. Nice boat. They look soo cool.

I think it is A-Cat inspired for the shape of the hulls. Or at least it is very similar looking. The bow is just freaky.

Hey Powercat, why is the boom angle so high? Do you have a main from a regular 18 on it?

Skipshot

The picture is misleading. The boat is not pointed straight into the wind so the boom is swung way out to port almost to the dagger board. The main is a SX main made by Chip Buck at Whirlwind.

Hey windpwr - Nice sail pattern!

My baby at our dock (click pic for larger view):
Image

I inherited her 6 years ago when I bought a windsurfer for the hubby for $250. The guy with the board said, 'Here, take this too. Just get it out of my yard.' There was no trailer, so we brought it home on top of our pop-up camper. It sat in our yard for 3 years before I finally rigged her up. Imagine my surprise when I found she was ready to sail! A year later, a buddy gave us an old boat trailer that we modified for the Hobie, and I've been sailing her every since.

Nice...that could be the best deal in history, Volklgirl, she's a beauty, love the 2 tone hulls too. I didn't think there was another of that original sail pattern still out there!

Picked mine up in April for about $500.00 on Craigslist. Spent the last 8 years in a shed. It's no racer but it is as solid as they come, no soft spots in the hulls, sails are in great shape too. Have had it out many times this summer and really put it to the test and it has performed like a champ.

Todd

Nice main Powercat, like the colours!!

Do you need a comptip to use that sail¿?

You got it from whirlwind no? What is the exact model and colour scheme?

Thanks!

Splash,

The 18SX does have a bigger sail than the standard 18 (taller mast too). That would be the only reason it would not work on your 18. The comptip is not the issue. The newer standard 18's had comptips too.

I did get it from Whirlwind and it is a custom color scheme that I came up with. I chose from some of the colors they had available at the time. All I did was print out the panel layout from whirlwind and color it up the way I wanted it and told them over the phone which panels were what color. The 18SX sails are vertical cut verses the standard 18's which are horizontal cut. Therefore, the panel layout is different but I would think you could come up with a similar look for yours. My sail is mylar that is similar to the stock material used on the Hobie 20. I would assume that you would go with dacron like the original but you could also order up a polyester or pentex sail.
