I don't use the hook clip.

The dogbone (old school) is tied to a line that goes through a block through a rope lock, and then to the shock cord. The shock cord pulls the dogbone up preventing it from unhooking by accident. To unhook, just sweep your hand down across the hook as you scramble in while tacking or jibing. Easier to unhook, easier to hook. I haven't used the clips since 1974 (I was 8, and Dale Bragger of Westerly Sails took my first clip off). I have broken hooks, rope locks, and line, but I have never unhooked by accident.

:) Loose the clip, just causes problems. Dogbones are good for chipping teeth. Can't beat the J & H handles. For the last three years have used the J&H with ball and harness with slot for the ball. Very safe and easy to use. BTW, have been on the wire since 1971. Took the clip off first time out.
