:) Since you have the H-17 and H-18 mast, go ahead and try it out. The H-17 sail would be a better choice. The H-18 mast will be heavier, does it have a Comptip? let us know how it works out.

No idea. I am assuming that it's an early 80's boat... so probably not.

After some research... an 18 mast is only 6" taller than an 17sx mast... if they use the same extrusion, how can the actual mast be that much heavier?

Yes, but the comptip on the 17 is much longer. Do we know the weight differences between the two rigs? That's probably of more importance than height.

I can understand the fact that the sails will have more surface area... but wouldn't that same attribute prevent anyone from using a flat top sail?

Different designs. The square tops tend to have softer leach tension, so they spill more wind when needed. Plus the aforemention long comptip on the 17 mast allows it to flex, also spilling more wind. It's very similar to windsurfing sails.

What would prevent me from using a 17 SE sail with the 18 mast? Won't it just be 6" higher than with a 17 mast?

The head of the 17 sail may not spill the same when rigged on the 18. And you have the whole issue of getting the halyard locked and acheiving proper luff tension. Too little downhaul is a bad thing.

The 17 was designed as a light single handed sailboat. The crossbars and all parts were built on the light side. The crossbars do have a shorter life expectancy than what we have seen with the 16 and 18.

That explains a bit. (found this in an old H17 forum post)

It looks like I will consider using the 18 instead of the 17. It all depends on the integrity of the 18 hulls. Like I said, he used the boat as a wakeboarding grinding rail.

Dave:

Don't let the crossbars change your mind. My 20 year old 17 just "takes a lickin and keeps on tickin". I just went out in 20 mph winds Sunday and it didn't make a sound. And it is at least 60 lbs lighter than a 18 with basically the same hulls.

What you are trying to do is what we in the automotive business used to call "Breeding an AssAche"

Things are designed and engineered the way they are for a reason.

If the 18 Mast would have worked on a 17, don't you think Hobie would have used it. Or do you think they LIKE carrying a whole new line of parts.

Manufacturers LIKE it when parts interchange between models. saves a lot of R&D time, a lot of space in the warehouse, and a lof of shelf space in the stores.

Here's another phrase that applies to what you are proposing, it sounds to me like you are trying to make ice cream out of horse poop..... which is fine, as long as you don't mind eating horse poop flavored ice cream.

Here's a thought for your consideration, take everyting your buddy has to give you, use it as trade bait to get what you want/need, or sell it on E-Bay and use the proceeds to buy what you need.

I hope my blunt reaction to your proposal has not offended you too badly, but if you ever want the darn thing to sail properly, you are headed down a path that will suck your time, energy, and enthusiasm, and in the end you will be unhappy with the result, and it will be worthless because no one else will want the abomination either.

Good luck whatever path your choose.

That's all great advice, but like I said... the project is almost complete. I sailed it last year with the 18 mast, and it worked great. I'll let you know how it turns out.

FYI, I built this boat from a 17 that was wrecked on Lake Michigan. I've purchased parts from various people on these forums and on craigslist, and built what should be a great cruising Hobie on a budget. I have no intentions to race this thing... only to take it out and have fun whenever I get the chance.

This is no different than Hobie 18 sailors putting Tiger rigs on their 18s.

Hot rodding a 17! Heck, now you need to throw a spin on it and, in the words of Mr. Sulu in the movie The Wrath of Khan, "Well fly her apart then damn-it!!!"

Can't wait to see some pics!

Good point!

I'm hoping to have her assembled and ready to sail by Friday. :)

This was the boat last summer... 18 mast with 16 sails.

You need a spreader bar on the bridle or else you will break the bows off the boat.

I have a temporary one that I made, and a real one coming from Wentz. :)

Are the hulls just built so light that they are weak?

No - the 17 wasn't originally designed to have a jib. A short bridle like that puts a lot of sideways force on the bows that they were never designed to withstand.

That's why the 17 Sport has a spreader bar.

No, but the 14 was built like a tank. And the turbo jib is tiny
