Karl,

I'm just throwing jabs. :) I'm jealous, in fact, I'd love to do it, especially since I don't have kids yet that would miss me. Not to knock technology, but what if all your electronics fail? that leaves you and Willie Nelson with fireworks show.

Trey,

Is Eprib some kind of fancy word for shark repellant? or a first aid kit

I lived on Andros Island many years ago. I've never been so scared of dying as I was one day out in a Mako 21 when a storm came in out of no where. Lightning crackin left and right, waves higher than the gunnales, and even with my nose on the compass I couldn't read it because of the rain.

So, when do you want ot go???

Seriously, it'd be nice to have a larger boat trailing you. Summer thunderstorms can be BAD news.

Good luck to you!

Karl,
Of course you're stupid. We're all (cat sailors) stupid. :D Even in the sailing world, we're considered to be "stupid." We're at the bottom of the chain, man. We can sail our boats flat in the water but we don't. We can sail sitting comfortably on our tramps (that's trampolines for all the stupid/one track minds :? ) but we don't. I mean, what sane person turns his boat over on purpose? We're always pushing the envelope. Nevertheless, we are envied because of our stupidity. Have you ever seen the expression on the face of the skipper of a $50,000 or $100,000 monohull as you cruise by him trapped out and flying a hull? These are the same guys that wont even speak to you inside the harbor.

There are guys here that go to Caralina Island (26 Miles off the Pacific coast) in a kayak. I say "go for it Karl." Take all the precautions and "Just Do It!" I wish I could go with you. You da Man!!!

No kidding. A kayak to Catalina?? Frackin' nuts. The ONE thing I want to do before I die is sail my Hobie 20 to Catalina. I grew up in Sunset Beach and we used to go over there on my dad's 27' sloop on weekends alot. The FIRST time I ever saw a catamaran, I was about 10 and a couple of the craziest Mofo's I have ever laid eyes on, sailed a hobie 16 from Huntington Beach to Avalon on a really windy day. We talked to them on shore and they were beat to death, and cold and tired and it was soooo cool. To put a date on this: We saw American Graffiti at the Casino theatre in Avalon! I have wanted to make the trip ever since I got my 20. One of these days, I wanna hook up with the gang that head out from Cabrillo Beach and do Two Harbors and camp over there and , what is that local drink everyone loves?
Now, sailing an FX/One across the Bermuda Triangle? No friggin' way.

Put me on that list, too! Somebody down south make the arrangements and I'll be the first one to shove off. I've been to Catalina three times - once on a 100' chartered sailboat, once on a Cessna, and once on the regular ferry - this time I'm driving! I just need to find crew stupid enough to trust me.

Anyone looking for crew for a 20 to make the sail to Catalina can add me to the list.

from HobieGary on catsailor

There are several trips each year. The first trip is usually near March 21 when the island is at its greenest.

May need chutes on the 20's to keep pace with these boys

Buffalo Milk! Sets you straight in a hurry.

Those socal Catalina guys have a yahoo group with info about the trip. See my recent post titled "Catalina" on catsailor. It was inspired by this thread.

Hey skipshot let's get a norcal posse and sail it this year!

Yea Buffalo Milk! Catalina was the ONLY place you could see Buffalo other than Lion Country Safari in Irvine back then. I have followed some of the Beachcats guys stories and they do the trip smart and safe. That the only way Mrs. Xanderwess will let me take any of the kids. The place in the picture is Cherry Cove I bet, and when I was a kid we'd moor there and stay a week in the summer. Snorkle, swim, fish etc.....what a blast!
We gotta busy summer this next year 2008 with the 20s, 14/16s and alot of guys going to BC, but the NEXT summer we gotta go Johnny. I guess March would be good too, spring break time and all. Maybe Div 2 could have a big regatta in Long Beach or somewhere and we can kill two birds with one Hobie.
Southern California is awesome that time of year too. We could actually sail to Catalina, then go skiing at Big Bear when we get back.

I say go for it bro!

When Columbus got ship-wrecked on Jamaca on his final trip to the America's, one of his crew paddled from Jamaca to Haiti in a canoe to go get help. Thats over 120mi at the shortest. He then had to make it to Santa Domingo to actually find any Spanish to get Columbus some help. The canoe paddler in question had two jamacan (native american) companions, one died on the second day out - the other one went to Santa Domingo with Columbus' dude. I think it took them about 5 days in a crappy indian canoe.

If Columbus could do it, so can you.
