Here's a question I should have asked a month ago when I bought my H16:

Does anyone here have liability insurance for their hobie? I'm not that worried about insuring the boat itself but more worried about being liable for damage caused to other boats in the event of a collision. For example; if I was knocked off my boat, the main sheet binds, and it sails into a moored boat. I was told by my insurance agent that I'm covered by my auto insurance if the boat/trailer damages anything while I am towing it, but the thought of "on the water" coverage didn't occur to me until now.

Yes i have insurance i have 300,000 liability pluss full coverage on my tiger. If something happens its just like on a car you are liable, and with no insurance you are gambling with your house car ect. $200 a year is not much for peace of mind.

Your homeowners policy extends liability coverage for your described scenario. Homeowners also offers limited coverage for the boat. I feel that you are best served by a boat owners policy with a low deductible. If you file claims against your homeowners policy you face termination of the coverage. Boat owners coverage is inexpensive, I pay $135 a year for 2k on my boat and 500 on the trailer with 500,000 liability coverage. I broke a spin pole last summer and had it completely replaced for a $100 deductible, it was a $600 item. This year my premiums are exactly the same as last year. I have found any claim under 5k goes thru with no questions asked, over 5k and it becomes an issue. My coverage is with State Farm and I am also a licensed agent in NC.

Progressive jacked up my premium from $140 to $190 for no reason on my part, so I shopped around and found All State coverage for $72 with the same coverage as Progressive. Although I don't race, All State covers racing small sailboats for no extra charge.

Plunking down a little bit of money for a lot of peace of mind is worth it to me.

Allways good to shop around. Geograpical areas would make a difference in premiums I am sure.

Be sure that the homeowners covers "Organised racing" if you compete with your boat, some specifically do not.

My policy with USAA does.

How much does USAA want? Is it a rider?

CDR, USN (ret)
