I was screwing around with Google Maps and discovered their new feature which includes photos of the actual places on the map which correspond to the search. Naturally I wanted to see if Google included a photo of my house, and I was pleasantly surprised of Google's timing of taking the photo.

Here are my coordinates:
3525 Jordan Rd (in the city of) Oakland, CA

Click on the "Street View" option; you may need to rotate the photo for the surprise.

On a side note, an elderly neighbor of mine stopped by to chat when he saw the boat parked out front and had a story to tell. When he was in high school in Southern California one of his classmates was a shiftless beach bum which everyone thought would become more of a liability for society than an asset. The bum was Hobie Alter.

What was his response when you told him about Alters impact?

The neighbor is well aware of Hobie's impact. His exact words are burned in my memory, "Hobie went on to become a billionaire while I became a Nobody."

Very cool.

Though I'm not so sure it's a good idea to share the location of your boat with the whole entire world...

I thought about that, too, but not because I'm afraid of losing the boat, but junk mail and ID theft. I keep the boat at a storage yard, and brought it home for only a day or two for maintenance.

I love it  We were messing with Google maps one day and found my youngest son's car in our driveway AND his best friend's driveway.

fascinating feature... but I find it more than a little disconcerting that someone is driving around taking pix of your property the entire world can access. the pix of my home was taken last summer.

There's lots of litigation on that right now. People are suing Google for driving down roads marked as "private property" and "no trespassing".

However, the majority of the pictures are taken from public streets. It's actually a pretty good feature for finding where you're going. You know what things look like before you get there.

Indianapolis was one of the test markets for this, and quite a fuss was made over it. One of my neighbors was "caught" bending over, weeding her garden, in a rather un-flattering pose. She told the TV station interviewing her about it "At least it proves I do my yard work!" I guess they also captured one guy standing on a street corner picking his nose.

It is neat how you can "virtually" drive down a street, with other cars and oncoming traffic, looking around at the sights.

I also like the "Bird's Eye View" on Windows Live Search, allowing you to look at the house (or whatever) at different aerial angles, rather than just straight down like Google Earth.

Same thing happened to me.... Twice in fact.

The Streetview team got a picture of my truck with trailer hooked up and AI slung over the cab sitting in front of my house. Latter that day, they cruised through the park I sail out of and got another picture of the truck and trailer.

Too weird.
