Does any one know of a good insurance company for a Hobie 20?

I did quite a bit of research concerning liability insurance and found that my auto and home insurer (State Farm) was the cheapest. For $100k liability coverage and replacement cost for my boat, I pay about $200/year.

I use The U.S. Sailing one design policy. My Boat a 2007 Tiger covered for $16,500 plus $300,000 in liability and it covers racing. (sails excluded during race activities) it's about $260 a year. Some yacht clubs and Marinas require minimumn coverage. Also some race activities require minimums. Check arround and consider the use of the boat to make your decision.

Got my H18 this year. State Farm will not write any new policies for boat insurance in Clearwater, Florida due to being in hurricane risk region. 1984 Hobie not worth a great deal of money, but my primary concern was for liability insurance only. I discovered that having a home owner policy includes $300,000 liability coverage for any non motorised boat upto 26 feet in length, at no additional premium.
Having spoken with other cat owners sailing from Dunedin Causeway this appears a little known fact. Ask you insurance agent, you may have liabillty coverage you did not know about!

Most all Homeowners Insurance policies have stated liability coverage. How it extends is the variable. My State Farm policy in NC extends liability to the motorboat and up to 1k replacement on the sailboat at no additional charge. I used the policy when my original 18 got t-boned in a race. Even got to keep the boat. Bought the boat I sail today for that very 1k. I now carry separate coverage on the boat.
That was a scary day, get t-boned by a 6.0 Nacra, get carried to the beach as the boat is sinking, go thru a protest hearing with the other skipper fabricating his story, put the pieces of my boat on the trailer and drive home. Worst of all my wife was crewing for me, and she hasn't been interested since.

I have my Tiger insured through West Marine/Boat U.S. Very reasonable rates. Annual premiums about $200. For marine insurance quotes call 800-283-2883.

I have been happy with my State Farm policy on my Hobie 20 and Hobie 18.
They cover for racing and I did get a new starboard Hull for my 20 in 2006
and my 18 repaired in 1999 - both after crashes on Huntington Lake.

Not all boat insurance will cover racing.
I review my coverage every year for the 20, 18 and Jordan's 14.
I have enough value on my trailer and the 20 and 18 to replace them.
I have heard cases where sailors have insured their boats for the good deal they bought them for, not for replacement and have had problems fixing their boats after an incident.
