Outstanding Repair

Hey Buchanan, You took that repair to the next level. Very nice to see it published in the Hotline. From a peer in the business, hats off to you for putting that article together and demystifying repairs!

For those that don't know, in the past few Hotlines, Rick has been going through the steps required to fix your boat the absolute correct way. Lots of pix and good info. If you have any questions about how to do a Fglass repair, join the Hobie Class Assn. Buy a couple of back issues, the info is well worth it.
I don't know what Rick charged for the repair he did in the article, but I would have charged around $800+or-.

By the way, you could've just used '57 Chevy headliner for the pattern Rick.

Not only the articles,but Rick is very open with advice to other fiberglass repairs(provided you are a HCA member).I e-mailed him about repairing a dent in my boat and got a one page detailed explanation back.Rick was a well deserving choice for the Carlton Tucker award, good on ya Rick.

I think I said this in another post, but I have to second the gratitude for having those articles published. I have really enjoyed reading up on fiberglass repair from Mr. Buchanan. Being new to sailboats, and thus new to fiberglass repair, the last few articles that have been published are priceless to the novice. I haven't had to do any of these repairs yet (knock on wood), but I'm reassured to know that I have a direct source for hobie specific repairs. Thank you for writing those articles Mr. Buchanan. Please keep it up. I'm looking foward to the next "This Old Hobie". Great stuff.

Being a bit of a crafty, do it yourself kinda guy, the articles are useless to me. When a unnessesary hole appears in my boat, or I blow big chunks of gelcoat off the bow t-boning a H20 (Can't believe I didn't take the stern off the 20), I take it to people like Jeremy. Why? Because some things are better left in the hands of professionals. I love my boat in some rather disturbing ways, I want to make sure that repairs are done 100% properly. Its like if some one you care about, like a mistress, needs a kidney removed. You don't do it yourself do you? Well, maybe if you're a surgeon you do it yourself.

You can take your boat to Jeremy to get a repair done . He does great work, Also his glass guy Craig does great work . But if you loan your boat to Jeremy then you'll have glass work to do. He decided to "Shorten" my boards and rudders at the 40th, guess he liked the length of the fx-1 boards better.

Jeremy, Mike & Abbman...thanks for the kudos. Jeremy, I hope the articles aren't taking any of your business from you. The articles are a spin-off of some emails with Adrio & his Hobie 18 repairs. Karl...oh Karl, what am I to do? If you want, I can send you some step by step photos showing how to put those chunks of gelcoat back on your bow. It's one of the easiest repairs you can do. Maybe we should save it for another article. Some ideas I have for future HOTLINE repair articles are: rudders, pylon boot, & hull deck lip. If anyone has a repair they would like to see in the HOTLINE let me know. If it's something I have information on we'll run it past Matt. My email to use is [email protected] .

Rudders! I'll vote for rudders next. I think that's a repair that most folks would:
1) need to do
2) be a great pre-requisite for any other repairs...epoxy 101 if you will

Rich, we (un-expectedly) moved since you and I last talked about the 16 pylon shoe project we have to do. I've finally got a car in one side of the Garage and looking forward to clearing up space for a 16 hull on the other soon, even though the temp was 12F in there when I left for work today Thanks for all you do!
