In the following order, the HIN on Hobies are manufacturer ID, model, serial number, month built, year built, and model year according to:

http://www.hobiecat.com/support/warranty/sailserial.html

So, HCCA1234A303 translates into:

HCC = Hobie Cat Corp
A = model, where model A is Tiger (just using it as an example, no, it is not Tiger's designated number... I hope)
1234 = the serial number, a set of assigned numbers
A = month the boat was built
3 = year built
03 = model year of this Tiger

OK, it does reads that way.

But here's my question:

Is the serial number -- the numbers after the ID and model -- unique to that particular boat? I see owners proudly listing their boats on forum posts as "H16 1234" for example.

More specifically, is 1234 the unique serial number for that boat among all Hobies? So, if I have boat 1234, there is no Getaway, Wave, or whatever also with the serial number 1234? There is only my H16 whose number is 1234?

It's related to a paperwork typo.

No serial number is duplicated, so yes each in unique. But... may have the same middle 4 digits. They would have different year models though.

You mean that the same or different model boats may have the same middle 4 serial numbers? Do I assume correctly or clarify?

Thanks.

EDIT: Wait! Got it. A different model year may have the same serial numbers.

I suppose there is the probability that a different model Hobie could have the same serial number and model year also? This situation would only come about if several numbers were misread.

This is Murphy's Law at work.
