Need Everyones Help

I'm so close to my dream job, I can taste it. My title would be Boating Safety Officer. My next step is to do a test that will include Boating Safety, Rules and Regulations.

What a better place to study then online with fellow boaters!! Please ask me boating safety, rules and regs and I will try to answer them as best as I can!!

Understanding that Canada requires ULC testing on PFDs... As a US citizen, can I wear a PFD that is UL tested when sailing in Canada?

If I put a motor on a catamaran do I have to have a "steaming light" at night?

I do not know of ANY body of water in the USA that does permit a boat at nite without lights. I have done it but it is stupid and dangerous, also I do NOT recommend a motor on a hobie.

Before you go sailing (or kayaking) at night you should look over the USCG's Colregs. It is legal to sail at night...the requirement to have a steaming light or for that matter the traditional red & green side lights will be based on how large your boat is and the local authorities maritime laws in conjunction with those of the USCG. Most of the time the basic requirement (small boats without a combustion motor) is to have a working white light which can be turned on and made visible in time to prevent collision.

In South Dakota, you need red& green lights on the bow or bows, and a white light on the stern at least 3 feet off the water. I do think it is dumb to sail without lights, but at any rate it is just about the most fun you can have on a hobie, especially flying on the trap , at night.

Here goes Trigg- If a large powerboat with limited maneuverability is coming down a navigational channel inside a marina and you're on your Hobie 16 tacking left & right working your way out of the marina for a day sail who has to yield the right of way to avoid collision?
