I am trying to organize a Long Beach To Catalina Island sail for this summer. Later summer. July or August. All Boats Welcome. But we would need a group to make it a safe trip. Let me know what you think and we will work out details

Sgt. P. - I've done this a few times many years ago with an organized group. Dave Kofahl from Flt. 3 organized it. Chase boats, boat safety checks, insurance.... We sailed to twin Harbrs and stayed at the Boy Scout Camp for 2 nights and 3 days over the Labor Day Weekend. Food & lodging. It's quite an undertaking to organize.
You might get some help from Flt. 3. Karen Christensen 582-439-4097; or log on to http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/so_ca_beachcat_sailors/
I'd be interested in going providing we get to spend a few days on the island, it's well organized, and it doesn't conflict with our trips to Alaska & Huntington Lake this summer.
I'll keep an eye on this forum to see how things are going.
Good Luck!
Rich

How come these crossings are made to Twin Harbors and not Avalon?

Skipshot - I don't know for certain, but I believe it's because every inch of shoreline at Avalon is already staked out for other things - snorkeling, swimming, glass bottom boat, mini submarine, etc.
Not much going on at Twin Harbors, so they probably have fewer rules and restrictions. I've never seen a catamaran pulled up on the beach at Avalon.
I believe they still have a water taxi service between Avalon & Twin Harbors, so you can still get to Avalon without taking your boat.

Count me in!!! (As long as it stays cheap)

And as Rich says, let's spend at least a couple full days over there. I'd like to sail around the island. Hopefully there's some nice wind for us otherwise it'll be a miserable trip. Santa Ana's could toast us.

Fourth of July falls on Saturday this year.

I've taken my power boat to Avalon as a support boat for the Outrigger Canoe races. Trust me, you do not want to get inside of Avalon on a Hobie. There are no beaches or shoreline which aren't lined with rocks. Plus, with the tide just right there is a huge surge which can bang your cat into someone else's not so cheap yacht$$$$$$. Two harbors is the place to plan on for your trip.
